Historical facts

The history of the development of the national costume of the Jews is diverse, interesting and even sad. When creating a traditional dress, representatives of the Jewish nation should have taken into account that the inhabitants of most countries were extremely negative towards them. Therefore, they tried to make the clothes look as if they looked naturally in any locality, but at the same time did not impersonate the person.

Hebrews managed to achieve this effect. The traditional Jewish costume combines two necessary qualities: it helps to emphasize the color, the specifics of the people, without causing misunderstanding in people of another nationality.

In a relatively short period within world history, Jews managed to achieve perfection in their national attire. Much was taken into account to make the costume attractive and comfortable.

Nowadays, Jewish traditional clothing is almost not subject to change, however, talented designers often modify outfits, experimenting with colors, decor and style.

On the way to the ideal

The Jewish national costume had to walk the steps of progressiveness in order to become exactly what people of the twenty-first century see it.

  • The very first version of Jewish clothing was born thanks to the culture of the great Babylon. Throwing off the shackles of Babylonian slavery, the Jews put on a caftan. Two shirts were considered standard - from linen and wool. The suit was complemented by a wide belt.
  • The reign of King Solomon had a positive effect on the national costume of the Jews. To create a dress began to use weightless fabrics that seemed airy. Embroidery in gold and silver threads has become widespread. Especially wealthy families could afford even the decor of precious stones. The hair of rich girls was decorated with pearls.
  • With the approach of the twentieth century, the clothing of the Jews was losing its chic. Conciseness and modesty began to prevail in style. Emphasis was placed on the details that determined membership of a community and religion. In order to merge with the European society, the Jews had to exploit the frock coats and black hats that were popular at the time.

Features of color scale

The national costume of the Jews does not differ in brightness and saturation of shades. The dress is kept, to some extent even strict. In the twentieth century, settling in the small towns of Europe, the Jews were afraid to attract attention, so they had to forget about colorful flowers.

Briefly describe the main color of Jewish attire - neutrality. Black is particularly prevalent. In the cold season, the Jews dressed in dresses decorated in brown or blue. And during the summer months, in order to escape the heat, they wore white clothes.

Material and Style

Jewish culture has always been focused only on life in the city, so the model for the peasants does not exist. Unlike representatives of other cultures, girls never had to personally produce the material for clothing - all fabrics were purchased in the markets.

The cut of the Jewish national costume is free and voluminous, however, does not completely hide the outline of the silhouette, which is a plus - what woman would like to conceal her dignity from other people?

Male outfit

Jewish men did not want to be in the center of women's attention through fancy clothes. They went the other way. The men's national costume of Jews evokes sympathy with its specific elegance, skillfully emphasizes masculinity and religiosity. The robe is a black cloak and frock coat.

The cape has an official name - tallit katan. Without this element it is impossible to imagine the national men's clothing! The cape looks like a white rectangle of fabric with a wide slit for the head. At the edges are special tassels. On each hangs eight strands.

Talit Katan is pleasant to consider only outerwear, but this is a delusion. Men wear a cape and under a shirt. It is important that the only condition is met - brushes must be on top of the pants.

Suit for women

Women's suits could not boast of something transcendental, but the dresses still did not hide the natural attractiveness of Jewish girls. Yes, they did not wear elegant clothes like Europeans, however, there was always something special about the national costumes of the Jews. What made them extraordinary.

Women's traditional outfit included a skirt, blouse, dress and apron. All clothes had to perform a practical function: dark colors (black, gray, brown) were perfectly guarded from household pollutants, which invariably haunt women who do housework. It was also believed that the apron protects from curses and the evil eye.

Girls who adhere to outdated views on religion, opted for dresses with long sleeves, hiding hands until the wrists. Such women's suits were decorated with white lace and embroidery, which symbolized purity and kindness. The dress was distinguished by a high collar, also complemented by lace. A tight leather belt was concentrated on the waist.

Baby options

The children's Jewish national costume did not differ much from the adult version. The girls wore such closed, devoid of brightness dress, but they were not as long as their mothers.

The boys had no right to wear a cape called "citite" - this was forbidden by religious canons. Having reached the age of thirteen, the young men could celebrate the barmitsva, and only after that the citite became accessible to them. After the celebration, the boy could also proudly call himself a man.

Jewelry and shoes

The Jewish national costume does not contain a large number of permissible accessories. Men wear belts and ties, but in rare cases. Ties cause many disputes among Jews. Tying it, you get a knot in the shape of a cross. That is what discourages adherents of orthodox religion.

Women loved hats. Beautiful beads that wore in two rows were in great demand.

Shoes in Jewish costume is a high, fairly comfortable shoes, securely fastened on the leg with the help of durable lacing. In the warm season, they were not wearing socks, and with the onset of cold weather, they had to use knitted laces.

Hats

No self-respecting Jew can not do without a hat. In some cases, men use several products. Most often it is a yarmulke covered with a dash or a kasket.

Of great importance is the Yarmulke. The size and cut of this traditional headgear conceals a hidden meaning. The Yarmulka looks like a round cap, and many people, having seen it, immediately think of the Jewish nation.

If you literally translate the name, you get two words - “yer” and “malka”. The translation is simple - “fearing the lord,” that is, God. Religion plays a big role in the life of the Jews.

The design of yarmolok is different. Perhaps this is the only bright attribute in the national costume of the Jews. Hats sew from wool and felt, there are knitted models. But men cannot buy a Yarmulke at will, giving preference to any style or color. The choice should be based on which option Jews from the community wear.

Black hats also give tips on religious affiliation. The size and the decorative inserts show which branch of Judaism the owner of the headdress is leaning towards.

Traditional costume in modern society

Jewish attire in modern times did not become less frequent. Until now, models of national costume adorn the streets of different cities. Deeply religious people did not refuse from capes with Yarmulke. Products have become a little simpler, but at various ceremonial events Jews appear in the original version of traditional attire.

National costume is necessary for dancing, because thematic festivals are often held! Girls prefer to speak to the audience in a modern variation of the Jewish outfit, as it is much more convenient to make active movements.

Reviews
