Poplin - a material that is rarely found in the description of the composition of clothing, much more often it is used in the manufacture of home textiles. However, sometimes in the shops there are dresses, blouses, shirts and other things from this fabric.

Undeservedly forgotten, poplin has excellent quality characteristics, which we describe in more detail below.

The name of this material is of Italian origin. Translated from the language of Dante, it means "papal", and is associated with none other than the Pope. The fact is that poplin was originally produced in one of the papal residences, which was located in France - hence the unusual name of the fabric.

In this article we will tell you about poplin dresses: about the advantages and disadvantages of this clothes, about its fashionable variations and how to take care of it.

Pros and cons of poplin

Despite the fact that modern poplin is manufactured using a completely different technology than a century ago, he managed to retain all of its characteristics, thanks to which this fabric was in demand.

The advantages of this material include:

  • the ability to keep long form;
  • ease of coloring and, as a result, a variety of colors;
  • durability and wear resistance;
  • ease of care;
  • ability to keep warm;
  • relative cheapness;
  • environmental friendliness and hypoallergenic;
  • mostly natural composition;
  • high degree of breathability;
  • ability to quickly absorb moisture.

Poplin has fewer disadvantages than advantages:

  • Poplin is quite hard, therefore it is not suitable for people with sensitive skin;
  • cheap poplin poorly painted, so quickly loses its color.

Composition

The composition of poplin, however, like most other fabrics, has undergone significant changes over time. When this fabric first appeared, it was made from natural silk fibers.

Modern poplin has a predominantly mixed composition. Silk among the components has become a rarity, wool, cotton, and sometimes synthetic fibers are more often present in the fabric.

If it is a question of poplinovy bed linen, then it, as a rule, is made of 100% cotton.

Experts distinguish several varieties of poplin, depending on the composition and type of weaving: silk, semi-silk (a combination of silk base and wool "weft" - transverse threads) and cotton.

Poplin varieties vary, including by the size of the hem. The most popular dresses are small ribbed.

Styles

Poplin dresses were once the prerogative of noble ladies, and now this fabric is so affordable that absolutely any girl can afford a poplin outfit. Not finding a suitable model of poplin dress in the store, craftswomen often sew it themselves, since this material is easily hidden and does not create difficulties in work.

Since the fabric itself is rather unassuming, dresses from it are not suitable for solemn occasions - they are more suitable for everyday life. Best of all look poplinovye dresses as simple as possible cut: tunics, shifty, sundresses, bags, and the like. Absolutely any length is admissible: a dress in the floor in the folk style and a very short little dress with a high waist in the style of baby dollars will look equally good.

Summer models

Since this material is well breathable and absorbs moisture, it is used mainly for sewing summer dresses.Such an outfit will make you feel comfortable in the heat, and will not hamper your movements.

Poplin dresses are very comfortable and lightweight. The styles can be varied, but the most popular are concise models, in which the simplicity of the silhouette is compensated by bright colors. Poplin drapes well, gently flowing, so it looks great on skirts. Popular models from poplin in retro style: with a dense bodice, a round neckline, a small sleeve and a full bell skirt.

We advise you also to pay attention to practical dress-shirts and light sundresses made of poplin.

Care

High-quality poplin is very undemanding in care: it can be washed in a washing machine at any temperature and dried in a drum. In addition, such things do not need to be ironed, because after washing they restore the shape themselves.

The problem is that today it is quite difficult to find a product from high-quality poplin, so if the material is in doubt, some precautions should be observed:

  • Wash the dress at a temperature of 30 to 60 degrees.
  • To remove complex contaminants, it is permissible to temporarily raise the water temperature to 90 degrees.
  • Dry in a place where direct sunlight does not penetrate.
  • If it is necessary to iron, switch the iron to the “cotton” mode.
