A hat-cylinder is a traditional headdress of Europe, which was common among men of the XIX century. Now the fashion for the cylinders is being revived, albeit in a different way: it used to be a gentlemen’s headdress, and now it is a fancy dress and extravagant attire for people of both sexes.

Often the cylinder is made for any event - matinee in kindergarten, fancy evening, New Year's corporate party, the original outfit.

Cylinder history

Initially the headdress was made of beaver felt, but then this material was replaced with plush and silk. For low-income people, hats were made of ordinary felt.

During the manufacture of a felt outfit, such phenomena as insane hatter appeared. Now this name is more connected with the character from L. Carroll's famous work “Alice in Wonderland” - a weird, eccentric tea lover.

But in the 19th century, everything was much sadder - due to the fact that mercury was used in the manufacture of felt, and its couples literally drove the hat makers out of their mind, causing dementia, hallucinations and other disorders.

In the modern world, the cylinder has become not only a fancy dress, but also the hallmark of various magicians and illusionists. Black hat owes its color to English Prince Albert, who did not like bright colors and a combination of different shades.

It is also worth talking about the curious varieties of hat-cylinder:

  • Bolivar is the name of a wide-brimmed top hat, named after Simon Bolivar, a public figure and liberator of Latin America.
  • Caps is a French variety of this headdress, which was very popular in Europe until the First World War.

Now the cylinder is an integral part of the dress of such a peculiar direction in art and clothing, like steampunk. Steampunk - fashion combines elements of the wardrobe of the Victorian era and the so-called mechanical style.

How to make a cylinder with your own hands?

To make such a headdress with your own hands is quite simple. To do this, you need the following items:

  • thick black cardboard;
  • a small piece of black fleece;
  • transparent adhesive tape;
  • Super glue;
  • a simple pencil or pen;
  • scissors;
  • a pair of paint brushes and glue;
  • varnish;
  • decoration to your preference (optional).

Algorithm action:

  • Cut a rectangle out of cardboard, which is equal in length to the diameter of the head, and a couple of centimeters are added to bends and seams. You can choose any width. With the help of transparent tape it is necessary to connect the edges of the rectangle and please the hollow cylindrical figure.
  • On a piece of cardboard draw a flat circle equal to the diameter of the cylinder circumference - this will be the so-called bottom of the headdress. Then around the first circle you need to draw the second one, a couple of centimeters different from the first one.
  • Cut the last drawn circle and make small notches to the level of the first circle - create the so-called fringe. Fold this fringe inside the small circle.
  • On the fringe gently apply glue and attach a circle to the bottom of the cylinder. For greater efficiency, you should glue the bottom with adhesive tape.
  • Then you need to think about creating a hat field. To do this, draw a circle on the cardboard that is equal to the upper circumference of the cover. After around it, you need to hold another circle, already larger in diameter, and cut both circles so that the ringlet turns out.
  • On the ringlet it is also necessary to create a peculiar fringe and glue it with the help of glue and adhesive tape to the other side of the cylinder in the same way as the bottom was glued.
  • On the inside of the cylinder - the one that will contact directly with the head - it is necessary to glue a strip of fleece. Then varnish the hat and add decorations (if required).

This is just one of the options for creating a headdress with his own hands. In addition, a cylinder hat is also made of felt, natural leather or suede on a similar basis - all cardboard parts are simply sewn or glued to the fabric material and then glued to each other in the manner indicated above.

It should be noted that the headdress made of felt is very warm and will be able to warm the head in cold weather, and the leather version looks luxurious, but at cost it is quite expensive. Therefore, the choice of material for the cap should depend on the purpose of this accessory and the frequency of its use.

How much is a cylindrical cap?

It is not necessary to create a headdress of this type with your own hands - it can be easily purchased both in a specialized store and on the Internet. Such a purchase, depending on the type, color, presence or absence of jewelry, the material from which it is produced, can cost from 200 to 1500 rubles. On average, women's black hat-cylinder costs 450 rubles. The red cap will be more expensive - about 780 rubles.

What to wear?

In the modern age, cylinders are mostly used by women than by men. And if you do not take into account the costumed parties, masquerades and acting details, then this headdress has long been a fashionable trend of women's fashion.

Such a bright and unusual headdress can be quite relevant and relevant detail of the image, if properly combined with clothing.

  • Coat - a cashmere or textile coat of classic cut will create in combination an old, vintage look of good old England of the XIX century. It is better if the coat will have a dark shade. In such a dress it would be appropriate to visit an exhibition, a museum, a cinema, a theater, or go for a walk on a gloomy or rainy day.
  • Wedding image - many brides prefer to use this headdress as a detail of their festive image.
