There are a large number of dog breeds, each of which has its own distinctive character traits and unique appearance. It is the latter that becomes the key factor that influences the choice of a pet.

Besides the fact that dogs are large and small, short-haired and long-haired, they can be with and without a tail. There are many breeds whose hallmark is the lack of a tail.

Scientific research

The absence of such a part of the body as the tail of a representative of the family of canines caused many questions from scientists and researchers. For many decades, ingenious minds have tried to find explanations for this type of mutation in animals. After many laboratory studies, a conclusion emerged that gene mutations are the cause of the absence of a dog's tail. Individuals that have a short appendage or simply do not have it are called heterozygous.

It has also been proven that the presence of gene mutations has a strong influence on the future offspring. It is transmitted in 50% of cases.

It is categorically impossible to cross two heterozygous individuals, since the embryo will be affected by the disease of the spinal cord and will die in the womb.

Studies have shown that there are breeds of dogs that are characterized by gene mutations. Among them are the following dog breeds:

  • australian pinscher;
  • brazilian terrier;
  • British Spaniel;
  • French Bulldog;
  • Karelian bear dog;
  • Doberman;
  • Pyrenean Sheepdog;
  • Polish Lowland Sheepdog;
  • Old English Sheepdog;
  • Croatian Shepherd;
  • Swedish Walchund;
  • boxer;
  • boston terrier;
  • English bulldog;
  • miniature schnauzer;
  • rottweiler;
  • Welsh Corgi.

The length of the tail or its complete absence in these animals depends on many factors that influence the formation of limbs. Of course, this is the pedigree, the presence or absence of a gene for an innate mutation, the dominant and nominal genes.

Kinds

There are quite a few breeds of dogs with a short tail. Some of them are familiar to us - they can often be seen on the street and in the park. Below are the most popular individuals.

How to choose a puppy?

Choosing a puppy without a tail is as responsible and difficult as any familiar puppy with an appendage. The main thing to understand is that the absence of it in a dog is not a defect or a disease.

To choose the right pet, you need to follow a series of recommendations, which will be discussed below.

  • You must decide on the breed of dog and gender.
  • Then you need to carefully study the pedigree. This is required in order to understand from which parent the gene mutation was transmitted.
  • Inspect the tail. You should make sure that the appendage has not been surgically stopped, and that the person may be dealing with fraudsters. If the operation was performed, it leaves a distinct mark in the form of a scar.
  • You must familiarize yourself with the vaccination card.
  • If you take a puppy in the kennel, then you need to be sure of the good reputation of the institution.

A dog without a tail is not considered special. She is the same as all other four-legged pets, is a friend of man and needs care, care and respect from her master.
