Dobermans - large short-haired service dogs. The author of the book “The Intelligence of the Dog” S. Koren identified this breed as a group of the most capable dogs. Dobermans, with proper upbringing, have a good, agreeable temper. At the same time, in a critical situation, they can stand up for themselves and for their master.

Black color for Doberman is natural, as it was originally from the breed.

History of origin

At the end of the XIX century in Germany, Karl F. Dobermann bred a large guard dog, which was named Dobermans in honor of the creator. In 1894, after the breeder's death, the word “pinscher” was added to the title “Doberman”. In 1949, while editing the standard, it was removed, returning the breed to its original name. Karl Friedrich Dobermann did not keep records of selection, therefore nobody knows about the true origin of the dogs. It is assumed that breeds such as pinschers, dogs and rottweilers could have been involved in the creation of the population.

Initially, the individuals of this breed were more stocky, without any particular grace, with an aggressive character. Later, the breeder Otto Geller, selecting Dobermans, removed puppies with a fierce temper from the litter, thereby softening the character of the representatives of the breed. Today they are obedient, easy-going dogs that are easily educated, but have not lost their guarding and detective qualities. The first show of representatives of Dobermans took place in 1897 in Germany. Literally from that day, the breed has gained popularity, not lost to our time. The ICF recognized the population in 1960.

Description

The next breed standard was adopted at the end of 2015. According to him, animals should look a certain way.

  • If you look at the pet from above, the head has the shape of a wedge, ending in a blunt nose.
  • On the flattened forehead there is a small, but clearly marked transition to the muzzle.
  • The jaw is long with a scissor bite, with white teeth.
  • Eyes of standard size. For Doberman black color, let's say a deep dark brown color of the iris.
  • Large erect ears with sharp ends are located on the highest part of the head, with the base adjacent to the cheeks.
  • The neck is strong, muscular, of medium length.
  • Raised elongated withers high.
  • Strong back with elastic lumbar.
  • Slightly oval chest has a standard width.
  • Tightened belly forms a beautiful smooth line.
  • Legs are thin, muscular, long.
  • The tail is often cropped. If it is saved, it looks like a small arc going up.
  • Short shiny coat tight to the skin. Vices considered soft curly wool with a peeping undercoat.
  • The dog has a beautiful graceful silhouette, but at the same time a strong bone skeleton and developed muscles. The combination of elegance and power is characteristic of this particular breed.

The dog moves easily and resiliently, creates little noise while running. The step is natural, sweeping, running is fascinatingly beautiful and rapid.

Character

The times of the first ferocious Dobermans are long gone; the breeders tried to get peace-loving friendly dogs by selective selection. Their moderate malice is brought up specially only as needed, if the dog has to perform security functions. Dobermans are considered smarter than European shepherds. Easy to train. If the dog is given a lot of attention, is seriously engaged in training, it will acquire the necessary qualities for the owner. The animal can be grown moderately aggressive to protect the territory. At the same time, the dog will not rush at everyone: it understands the “friend-foe” ratio. He will not pester the host’s guests with his diligent security actions, but he will not let the thief out of the courtyard.

Families where there is no need for a guard raise a good-natured, outgoing friend who loves all family members. For young children, he can become a caring nurse. In the police service, the dog is well trained in detective work, since it has a keen sense of smell. With proper training, impeccably searches for any object, as well as people and animals. Whatever duties may be assigned to the Doberman, he will always be a loving and devoted pet for his master.

Black color

Black color without tan was inherent in the first Dobermans. Today, it is included in the breed standard and is valued rather highly, as it comes from biological processes, which are the exception rather than the rule. Genetically, a dog must have a tan coat, but such a phenomenon as melanism allows an animal to have a completely even black color. These are hereditary changes in which the genes responsible for the production of melanin turn out to be stronger.

Melanism does not affect the health and physical development of the dog at all. A rare case when the standards of the ICF not only recognize a genetic failure, but also give these animals prizes at exhibitions.

Dobermans have several types of black color.

  • Anthracite - beautiful smooth color with a brilliant sheen.
  • Deep black. It has a slight red tint that can be seen in bright sunlight. A beautiful tide on black wool has a dog due to the presence of a gene responsible for red hue.
  • Black and tan - natural color Doberman. But the tan should not be arbitrary, chaotic. Standard allows you to have it only on the face, withers, chest and limbs.

At birth, puppies black color is determined immediately. Harder with dogs of other colors. It is difficult to understand whether the baby will have an isabella or blue color in the future: these shades are acquired with time.

Care

Caring for Doberman with black wool is the same as for other animals of this breed. The color of the fur is not affected by food, medicines or the use of shampoos. For a dog to be healthy and cheerful, certain activities are needed.

  • Dobermans need an active lifestyle, they need walks, training, physical and mental stress. Without them, the pet will wither away.
  • Most often, a dog is stopped by a tail, some owners are also ears.
  • Dogs cut off claws as they grow up. With an active lifestyle, they grind on their own.
  • You can bathe your pet once a month.
  • Ears are cleaned several times a month, eyes washed if necessary.
  • After the walk, check the paw pads: the dog could get hurt or rub the corns.
  • In winter, a short-haired dog is uncomfortable. Walking should be reduced in duration or purchase clothes for a dog.
  • As a food, you can use ready-balanced premium premium feed. They diversify a small amount of natural food. You can fully translate your pet to a natural diet: develop a menu that contains lean meat, boiled fish, cereals, vegetables, yogurt. As required, vitamins and minerals are added to the products.

Selection

Choosing a puppy, you should pay attention to its appearance. It should be well-groomed, with clean mucous membranes, without swelling and odor. A swollen abdomen can tell about the presence of worms or a problem with digestion. A healthy puppy is active and cheerful, he will run up to sniff the person who approached him.

The patient will hide behind the mother or sit without moving. He can whine when taken in his arms. Before you make a choice, you should watch the puppies.

Too aggressive or, conversely, shy puppies are not inherent in this breed. Such behavioral reactions are considered a defect.

If the color of the coat is important, check the color of the parents in the documents. Black-toned babies are usually guessed right away. A black puppy without tan has only 2 shades: brilliant and reddish. If there are others, such a baby is better not to choose. When buying a Doberman account for the tasks that will be assigned to him, and price opportunities.

  • Dogs worth 100–270 dollars may have slight deviations from the standard. Such animals do not participate in exhibitions. But this does not affect their character and mental abilities. Depending on their upbringing, they can become guards, guides, nannies, or simply good and devoted friends.
  • Puppies worth 270–400 dollars can participate in exhibitions and are suitable for breeding.
  • Dogs worth over $ 400 have the ideal pedigree, it is they who occupy prizes at all exhibitions.

In the next video you will find additional information about this breed.
