These fluffy little dogs captured the hearts of many, but the Queen of England, who was the founder of their breeding, first appreciated their beauty and beauty.

Origin

The breed has more than one hundred years, the first mention of the Welsh Corgi were in the X century in Wales. It is known that these dogs were excellent shepherds. Having short legs, they could easily dodge the hooves of animals when they helped in the shepherd's business. This breed is one of the first belonging to the shepherd. Welsh Corgi is divided into 2 types:

  • welsh corgi cardigan;
  • Welsh Corgi Pembroke.

One of the legends says that these nymphs were introduced to these dogs by people who used them as sleds. This explains the spot on the back of the Pembroke, resembling a saddle. Welsh Corgi can be attributed to the family of shepherd dogs, only dwarf.

Despite their attractive appearance, dogs of this breed were not popular, but acquired it in 1892 after the first participation in the exhibition. Half a century later, the breed became world famous when the king of Great Britain presented such puppies to his 2 daughters. One of them, Elizabeth II, and started breeding Welsh Corgi.

    Description

The Welsh Corgi Cardigan and the Welsh Corgi Pembroke are quite different from each other in terms of professional breeders. Although a simple man in the street is unlikely to distinguish that the types are different. Corgi-pembroke is smaller, and has a different head shape than a cardigan. Corgi cardigan has longer paws, which makes this species more efficient than pembrokes. In the latter, more and more deviations from the norm have been observed recently both in weight and height, and the paws remain the same length, which makes the ground clearance even less, due to which they seem to be less agile and suitable as a home dog.

Cardigans also have a wider chest, excellent posture, the outlines of the skull are aristocratic and resemble a mini-face of a large German Shepherd Dog. And pembrokes, in turn, cause a smile of affection more. Corgi-pembroke seems to be smiling because of the contoured maw. The shape of their heads like a fox.

The color of the pembrokes differs from the color of cardigans in more saturated tones. The colors are varied: from golden-red with white spots to black, but this is very rare. The most common colors are considered tricolor: brown-white-black with different shades. And cardigans are known for their brindle color.

The length of the dog's coat is almost the same as that of the sheepdogs, but for the cardigan it is harder than for the Pembroke. The undercoat is thick and well repels water. The growth of cardigans according to the standard is from 26 to 13 cm, and the weight ranges from 12 to 17 kg, depending on the gender of the dog. Pembrokes reach a height of 25 to 30 cm, and weigh 13 - 20 kg.

Another significant difference is that the Pembrokes were often born scanty, or they were stopped by their tails until in many countries they were forbidden to do it, and it is simply impossible to meet the short tail cardigan. In this regard, the Pembrokes began to resemble foxes even more when it turned out that their tail is fluffy, and the muzzle is also very reminiscent of a fox.

The lifespan of a cardigan is slightly longer than that of a pembroke. The average is from 12 to 15 years.

      • Sonorous voice. The breed is no different with talkativeness, but if your pet has been taught to bark, the dog's voice will amaze you. When you do not see who makes sounds, you might think that a German shepherd barks, and not this baby. If the dog is not weaned from barking, he will do it with pleasure and very often. Therefore, if you are not satisfied with this alignment, engage in the dog's re-education.

If from childhood you do not wean from this habit, then the dog will always strive to bite you and the household by the leg.
      • Voracity. It is necessary to carefully approach the diet of this dog. Otherwise, corgi is threatened with obesity, and with it the diseases associated with this scourge.
      • Activity. The fact is that these shepherd dogs are used to moving a lot. Throw out the accumulated energy should be walking 3 times a day, otherwise a puppy of corgi will turn your cozy home into a bite.
      • It does not suit the role of a guard. Do not try to force corgi to guard the house. Because of their mild, malign character, these dogs love one and all, so in order not to expose the dog to danger, you should not impose on him the duties of a guard.
      • Requires careful maintenance: need to constantly comb out.

      Owner reviews

Reviews of the breed are positive. According to most owners, dogs are distinguished by intelligence, cheerfulness, kindness, and learnability. The disadvantages, judging by the reviews, include the fact that the dog needs to be bathed often: because of its short paws, the fur on the stomach constantly gets dirty, especially in rainy weather.

All owners also confirm that walking the corgi is necessary a lot and for a long time, otherwise the unspent energy will have a bad effect on the furniture in the house.
