All the many breeds of dogs that are found now come from the ordinary "gray wolf." But since these are closely related species or even subspecies of one species, hybridization rarely occurs between them. The result of this process and becomes a wolftail - an animal that deserves very careful consideration.

What it is?

Wolfcat is a hybrid of a wolf and a dog, which is occasionally found even in the wild. Of course, not domesticated, but runaway and wild dogs are involved in hybridization. Wolves generally do not consider them to be competitors in their natural habitat. A typical hybrid is distinguished by the strength of a wolf, while at the same time it fears a person less. Crossing of animals was practiced for a very long time, but old attempts gave an insufficiently stable result.

From the previous hybrids it is worth mentioning the following:

  • Dutch wolf dog of Sarlos;
  • Chinese Kunming Sheepdog;
  • Czechoslovakian wolf dog.

Modern wolffights are derived in Perm, at the Institute of Internal Troops. For hybridization used German shepherds. Perm cynologists claim that they managed to achieve the greatest controllability when compared with previous hybrids. As well as the official description of the breed indicates such advantages in comparison with simple dogs, such as:

  • more developed sense of smell;
  • enhanced intelligence;
  • great endurance.

In the 2000s, testing the qualities of the Permian wolf-cat at the borders with Mongolia and the PRC. However, the breeding program is now closed. Returning to the background of the issue, it should be noted that spontaneous hybridization took place already in antiquity. A number of images showing half-coiled, half-wolf or half-dog (depending on the specific place) have been preserved.

In 1766, an attempt was made to cross a wolf and a shepherd. Appeared 9 puppies received the conditional name "Pomeranian dogs." Some of the animals were sent to special zoos, the other part was sold to aristocratic families.

But the problem at an early stage was the inability to get offspring, which would have turned out to be trained. A series of attempts in Great Britain and Germany ended in failure.

Only at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Dutch researcher Lander Sarlos managed to develop a specimen recognized by the world canine federation. For a crossbreed crossed German shepherd and she-wolf. The next step was crossing a she-wolf with this hybrid. The followers of Sarlos continued to work in the same direction. But in 1981, the wolf catcher was officially declared unfit for training and completely unmanageable. This did not prevent even the fact that the share of wolf genes remained no more than 10% of the genome.

One of the most successful experiments undertaken in the Czech Republic. The dog expert Karel Hartl, who worked in the nursery of the Czechoslovak Ministry of Defense in the town of Libejovic, managed to create a hybrid of a German shepherd and a Carpathian wolf. But even the Czech specialist managed to succeed only with the second litter. The resulting animals turned out to be quite strong, physically strong and normally treated people.

Czech wolf catcher was fully able to be trained and used for security needs. This breed has received the official name Czech wolf.

Wolfs are not able to bark. But he howls like a real dog. The life span of this animal can reach 20–30 years.The exact figure depends not only on the right care, but also on the specific breed with which the wolf was crossed. In any case, the health of the hybrid is much better than any other breed.

Thick coat reaches high density. The undercoat is also thick, which significantly reduces the risk of hypothermia and respiratory diseases. therefore wolftail is able to endure severe frosts on the street for a long time. In addition, this breed extremely rarely needs preventive vaccinations. There are even a number of cases where vaccines had no effect.

Teeth of mestizo even visually more powerful than the recognized fighting dogs. With proper training, their strong bite becomes almost an absolute weapon. From a wild ancestor, wolf-dogs inherit an exceptional sense of smell. In dogs of common species, it is much less developed. There are even legends about the ability of a wolffly to distinguish the blood of cancer patients and healthy people. And there are also stories about how this animal followed the tracks left 5–7 days ago, and never made a mistake, did not get lost.

It is difficult to say whether this is true or not, but it is necessary to point out that wolkosobs also have weak points. Among them, breeders and dog handlers name the following:

  • inclination to the same ailments as that of German shepherd dogs;
  • unstable psyche (sudden transitions from benevolent behavior to aggression);
  • susceptibility to abnormal bone development (when bones are inherited from dogs, and ligaments and tendons from wolves or vice versa);
  • bite defects;
  • danger of rabies.

Varieties and their description

It should be borne in mind that the Saarlos Wolfhund and the Czech Vlchak are officially registered, but in the true sense of the word, wolves in any sense of the word can be called hybrids of any wolves with any dogs. The following types are recognized as classical types:

  • black
  • gray
  • black spotted;
  • dirty white.

But it must be remembered that the color of wool can differ significantly, depending on which dog was hybridized with a wild animal. Peach and white tones are obtained by crossing with the Belgian Shepherd. Volkosob, crossed with German shepherd, often gets black color. In any case, to look for its characteristics in any standard does not make sense - because there are no standards at all. However, there is a practice, the generalization of which shows the most general form of the animal.

Wool has the following characteristics:

  • grows straight and outwardly smooth;
  • differs in small length;
  • tightly pressed to the body;
  • denser on the neck and on the inner edge of the ribs;
  • is above a powerful undercoat.

The extremities of the wolf-noses are strong and large, noticeably close to each other. The corpus is different in fryiness, has a rectangular shape and thoroughly developed muscles. Straight back smoothly, almost imperceptibly, turns into a powerful croup. The mouth is about the same as that of a regular wolf, and in it are sharp fangs. The cuneiform head is crowned with a broad forehead.

Muzzle of great length is also quite wide, has an expressive structure. The head rests on a dry neck. The thick tail is quite long and set high. The chest contains many muscles, but it does not reach the elbows. The jaws are symmetrical in relation to each other. For wolf catcher, scissor or pincer bite is typical. There are 42 teeth in the mouth.

The eyes of this animal are relatively small and painted in the tone of yellow amber. From above, the head ends with triangular-shaped, pointed ears. Depending on gender, height and body weight can vary greatly. Males weigh from 28 to 38 kg with an increase in withers of 0.73–0.83 m. In females, their weight is 23–34 kg with an increase of 0.68–0.79 m.

Important! All wolftails have short hair. Attempts to create a long-haired breed (by crossing with a poodle, for example) were made several times, but they all ended in failure, and the possible result itself is unlikely to be convenient in practice.

The mixed breed Wolfhund, also known as Czechoslovakian Wolf, was bred as a result of work begun in 1955. At that time, the World Cynological Federation condemned such experiments, but Czechoslovak biologists did not heed these recommendations. The breed is divided into 3 branches, 2 of which are recognized later by the same federation. The dogs obtained on the basis of the experiment were handed over to the police and the armed forces. Since such a specialization was assumed from the very beginning according to the decision of the government of Czechoslovakia, a German Shepherd Dog was chosen for hybridization. Candidates for crossing were selected very strictly and evaluated for a number of important parameters. In total, 48 of the best representatives of the original breed were selected.

Important! Actually, Wolfhunds in the modern sense of the word did not turn out right away, but only as a result of crossing hybrids from the first and second generations.

Importantly, the Czechoslovakians managed to create not just viable, but also fertile livestock. In addition to the purely practical value (the possibility of maintaining the breed without constant updating of its composition), it had a great scientific meaning. Additional confirmation has emerged that modern dogs and wolves have common ancestors, moreover, they are subspecies of the same species, and not close species, as previously thought. Czechoslovakian Wolfhund has the following features:

  • as strong as a wolf;
  • different wolf health;
  • relatively well managed (like the German Shepherd);
  • more difficult “Germans” are trained and more stubborn when learning various skills;
  • silent, not too often voices;
  • has a strong external resemblance to wolves;
  • inherited standing ears from shepherd dogs;
  • possesses high, strongly developed paws.

A wolf can have both a straight and scissor bite. At the international level, both of these options are recognized as the norm for the breed. A mandatory feature of any wolves should be a high tail fit. It is very lush and long, like a real wolf. You can often see how this tail goes straight down. If emotional excitement occurs, the tail becomes crescent-shaped and lifted. In most cases, wolves are colored yellow-gray. Occasionally you can see silver-gray animals. Lighter than the main part, the spots cover the neck, chest and face.

The earliest of the modern branches of wolffoss is the Saarlos dog. At the international level, it was recognized in 1981. But breeding work began as early as the 1920s. The Saarlos dog is slightly larger than the Czech wolf (its height is approximately 0.05 m more). And also this animal is lighter than a Czech descendant. Quite a few Saarlos dogs have a whitish color. But the number of such representatives of the breed is steadily declining. Purebred saarlos in the XXI century generally have a little left, but the Czechoslovak Wolf can boast a stable number of livestock.

Separate conversation deserves the third branch - Russian wolftail. In addition to the Perm developments already mentioned, selection in this area was also conducted in St. Petersburg. For starters, wolves were crossed with Malamutes. Through the use of these sled dogs managed to achieve very large growth.

Another "component" of the mestizo - the Canadian wolf - stands out among other "gray" unusual value.

Russian Wolfhund is painted black, there is a white mark on the chest. The coat covering the paws and the lower part of the body is lighter than the others - it even gives the impression that it is gray. Russian Volkopes lives a little less than the Czech counterpart. The reason is prosaic - 1-2 years takes an increased size. Big dogs are almost never long-lived. The litter of the Russian wolfrel is not numerous, only in some cases more than three puppies are obtained. The International Cynological Federation believes that it is not an independent breed at all, but a hybrid.

In different places live and more exotic wolves, upon receipt of which they used not only Alaskan Malamutes, but also West Siberian huskies and Siberian huskies. The first successful copy showed itself very well at the border customs. Subsequent successes were achieved by consistently reducing the volume of wolf genes. But no matter what kind of wolffoss people start, they can reasonably be proud of his cunning and fearlessness. Thanks to the powerful jaws, dead grip is guaranteed. Dogs wolfish calmly behave even when loud noises are heard.

But we must understand that they are unsuitable as satellites in the hunt. Initially, breeders, however, did not set such a goal. A special attachment to the owner will not manifest a wolffoot. Does not need a mixture of a wolf and a dog, and physical contact with people. However, this property is contradictory. Small emotional attachment to people may upset the owners, but there will not be a special need to constantly take care of the pet and actively communicate with it.

The possibilities of training wolf catcher are quite large, since any of them is distinguished by an advanced intellect.

A separate conversation deserves a Chinese wolf dog, called Kunming (in the city where she was taken out). The work of breeders was carried out for a very long time, for it was used both by German shepherd dogs and other breeds. Chinese specialists managed to get a large and active animal with high mental abilities. Kunming is used by law enforcement agencies and private individuals. However, we must not forget about the danger associated with the wolf genetic material.

Good marks are also given to the Lupo breed bred in Italy. To obtain it used mountain wolves and German shepherds. Animals developed in this way can perfectly survive in the mountains, have an exceptional sense of smell, and are very hardy. Lupo can endure hunger and lack of water for a long time. A unique feature is a strong attachment to a person (subject to proper training); but to buy a lupo is quite difficult, since it is not the most common breed.

Alaskan Malamutes were also bred with wolves. Such hybrids can weigh 25–55 kg. Their dimensions are also significantly different. Volamuts are able to live even at home, provided that they are provided with a large fenced plot. To exclude attempts to escape through the tunnel or otherwise, you will have to physically load the dog.

General rules of content

The number of owners of wolftails will inevitably grow. This breed of dog has been underestimated so far, the disclosure of its potential is still ahead. But before you start such a serious beast at home, you will have to carefully study the nuances of dealing with it. So, despite the general simplicity of training, it must be entrusted to professionals. The character of individual litters cannot yet be predicted; even for each particular puppy, the proportion of wolf genetic material is individual.

It will be possible to determine exactly how a wolffly behaves - whether it will have more features in the behavior of the shepherd or a formidable forest predator - at the beginning of upbringing. In any case, it is necessary to take care of the suppression of aggression as early as possible. It is extremely difficult to cope with an adult and a strong wolf walk in an aggressive state. Strictly unacceptable with all physical punishment. Because of the grudiness of the half-caste, which was punished in childhood, can cause a lot of trouble later.

But to perceive it as a solid problem is not worth it. A complex and contradictory character is largely compensated by the very highly developed intellect and increased activity. To smooth out the negative manifestations of character, will have to take care of the socialization of puppies. It is necessary to be prepared for the fact that the pet will partially retain the habits of the wolf and will begin to perform such minor dirty tricks as:

  • dig pits;
  • gnaw everything;
  • to hunt small animals and birds;
  • climb through the barricades;
  • penetrate enclosed spaces.

And while any restrictions on the part of the owners here simply do not work. Volkopes is very energetic, and energy, according to the unbreakable laws of nature, must be dumped somewhere.Part of the output are daily active activities, combined with tireless educational work. Wild volkopsy use mostly small game, but at home this option is not suitable. And not only because it is expensive or too difficult.

The presence of live food in the diet will exacerbate the predatory instincts, while the task is at any cost and quickly weaken them.

Wolfhawks do not show particular fastidiousness in food. The optimal diet is considered to be a harmonious combination of the following components:

  • premium class factory cooking poop;
  • raw meat in a cut form;
  • fermented milk food;
  • vegetables;
  • oatmeal boiled in water or broth;
  • kidneys and liver;
  • cottage cheese.

Important! Excessively saturate the diet with protein should not be. Its amount should be about the same or slightly less than the amount of carbohydrates.

The following products are banned:

  • pure milk;
  • fatty food;
  • biscuit;
  • sour cream;
  • yogurt.

It is undesirable to use raw meat too often. Preference should be given to meat food, past heat treatment. Under the influence of illicit products, the organism of the wolffish undergoes various negative changes. Among them may be the following:

  • disorders of the intestinal microflora;
  • food poisoning;
  • dehydration;
  • increased sensitivity to viruses and pathological microbes.

Often, veterinarians and dog handlers say that volkops should be given the most natural food possible. You can resort to factory feeds only in case of emergency, you need to return to a normal diet whenever possible. Some pets do not tolerate vegetable puree. They give it not in its pure form, but as an admixture to the broth or porridge.

When selecting products, you can not use those that contain too much vitamin A, D and calcium. Excess calcium can lead to impaired development of the dog.

Wolf cattle feed not earlier than 4 months. Eating eggs is possible a maximum of 2 times a week, and not as an independent dish, but as an additive to the rest of the food. From about the sixth week of development, the animal will have to be taught fruit and vegetable food. Vegetable products are rubbed or simply cut as small as possible.

    But in addition to food, you need to pay attention to many other subtleties. So, Volkopes obviously not suitable for maintenance in a city apartment. He will definitely need a large free space. But not every aviary is equally suitable for wolf catcher. You can not keep them in the booths without reliable insulation and without a good fence. Attempts to tie a mestizo onto a chain will result in negative consequences alone. The dog will be angry at the owner, will begin to whine and howl. It takes a maximum of 1 bathing time for a volkops in 6 months; the animal will dispose of dirt on its own. Shedding will be twice a year. Shedding is abundant, the wool will have to be regularly combed.

    It will be necessary to refuse the institution of Volkopses if there are already other dogs or cats. With them the half-breed gets along badly and behaves excessively aggressive. It's all about the increased leadership characteristics inherent in the wolffoot. He at any opportunity will certainly try to arrange a deadly fight. Soft and prone to concessions people will not be able to raise such a dog well enough. But the other extreme - the intention to break the nature of the animal - will not lead to success. It is required to build a strictly trusting relationship, while clearly identifying their own leadership. Only a person should be an unequivocal authority, and nothing else.

    Of great importance is a regular check with veterinarians. Appeal to them will allow a part to be avoided, and a part to reveal the overwhelming majority of diseases at an early stage. With the right upbringing, wolf-cloths may well change owners. They do not experience any negative experiences.Especially dangerous for this breed is rabies.

    Classical vaccinations against it, which are usually placed on dogs, are ineffective in this case. Therefore, the prevention of rabies infection, that is, the exclusion of contacts with already infected animals, is of particular importance.

    To avoid being bitten or escaping into the wild, you will have to build a strong fence that a volkopes cannot destroy, dig, or jump over. Initially, you should tune in to the manifestation of such habits characteristic of a wolf as:

    • howl at night;
    • conflicts with other animals;
    • hostile meeting guests.

    How to choose?

    If all these possible difficulties do not frighten people, and they decided to start a wolftail, you will have to carefully choose puppies. In our country there are no nurseries that purposefully engaged in the breeding of this breed. Therefore, you will have to contact only unofficial merchants. Inevitably, there is a risk, because it is impossible to obtain any guarantees of sufficient socialization of ancestors. Yes, and information about the percentage of wolf genes will have to take a word.

    If possible, you should focus on sellers related to law enforcement agencies. It was there that accumulated the greatest experience of breeding wolfopes and care for them. Those who wish to purchase the highest quality animal with a guarantee can go to the Czech Republic - there are 4 specialized nurseries.
