Among dog lovers, small Belgian dogs are particularly popular. Petit Brabancons are distinguished by their unusual appearance and excellent health; at one time they were considered the privilege of the nobility. The material of this article will be useful to those who decided to get a puppy of this breed. We will tell you in detail about where the Brabancons came from, how they look, what advantages and disadvantages they have, as well as what the main nuances of their content are.

Story

The history of decorative dogs with a funny appearance dates back to the XV century. It was at that time that she was bred by breeders who crossed a Belgian courtyard dog with a German Appenfincher. The first dogs at one time were depicted on the canvases of artists of that time.

However, breeders have not yet made any records about them.

The animals had a different type of wool, and the one that more or less corresponded to the modern, was obtained by mating small griffons with pugs. In addition, according to experts, the papillon and the Charles-Spaniel took part in the selection. This explains the characteristic black and tan color, the absence of a tail and its rare exaggeration.

In the XIX century there were three types of Brabancons: wire-haired Belgian and Brussels griffins, as well as smooth-haired Petit-Brabancons. The first Brabancons differed in small dimensions and were excellent rat catchers. Initially they lived in port warehouses, stables and houses of the poor. However, the animals were soon noticed by representatives of the royal nobility, who decided to make dogs of unusual appearance with their living toys.

Aristocrats liked not only the original appearance of Brabancons. The key point was the fact that these pets practically did not fade. And this, in turn, allowed to preserve the beauty of dresses and expensive dresses, which was important for the nobility. Among the special admirers of decorative dogs was the Belgian Queen Maria Henrietta. It was she who began to actively popularize the breed of dogs with a funny appearance.

This was manifested not only in the popularity of animals among aristocrats. In addition, the breed began to advance as a separate species, participating in annually held exhibitions. It is to the Queen that the Belgian dogs are obliged by the fact that in 1883 they were entered into the Tribal Book of Saint Hubert.

Unfortunately, the dogs of the aristocracy over time began to lose their basic working skills. They became pampered and weak, which also contributed to their interbreeding with fellows of other breeds, which was carried out to improve breeding and give the dogs more decorative. Different dogs were used for breeding, which left its mark on the character and appearance of the Brabancons.

Instead of hunting rats and leading an active lifestyle, the Brabancons began to sleep on soft pillows for a long time, riding in carriages with their high-ranking owners. Many of these dogs had their own servants. The task of the pets themselves was to entertain the owners with games and warm people at night, for which they were taken to bed with them. Especially liked funny dogs lonely ladies, disillusioned with men.

These pets brightened the lives of female aristocrats, drawing their positive attitude.

A little later, smooth-haired griffons began to be sold abroad, as elite and thoroughbred members of the canine family. And everything would be fine if fate did not threaten the existence of the Brabancons in that era. The Second World War caused a sharp decline in the livestock of the Belgian griffons, and miniature dogs were also threatened with extinction. However, the very fact that the dogs at that time lived in Great Britain and the USA saved the breed from complete extinction.

At the end of the war, the breeders decided to restore the breed, although it was in the form in which it was known at the time that this did not happen. In part, this was due to the fact that breeders wanted a certain renewal of the appearance of funny dogs. And already in 1963, the first standard was set for representatives of this breed. In May 2003, he was amended due to the withdrawal of the disqualification for individual colors, and since that time the standard of dogs has not been subjected to any changes.

In our country, pti-brabansons came from the United States in 1993, they were brought to St. Petersburg in the Nevsky Hobbit nursery, where they began to be bred. These dogs became the ancestors of puppies that are sold on the territory of the Russian Federation. For 6 years of breeding in the conditions of nurseries it was possible to increase the livestock of animals to 85 individuals. Today these dogs are called differently (for example, sleek griffon, Brabant griffon or small Brabancon).

Breed description

The appearance of the Brabant griffons is unusual and highly eccentric. With all its compactness and decorativeness, these animals only at first glance seem fragile and weak. In fact, they have a fairly strong constitution and no less grace when moving. According to the regulations of the standard, the length of the body of the individual from the ischial tubercles to the shoulders should be compared with the height of the animal at the withers.

The size of the dog is small: the height of adults at the withers is on average between 16 and 26 cm. In this case, the weight of an individual dog can vary in the range from 3.5 to 6 kg. As a rule, large size and weight are characteristic of males, girls are more compact. Inexperienced breeders often encounter the opinion that inside the breed there is a division into standard class dogs and representatives of the mini category. In fact, the breed is one and does not have any fractions.

Differences can be associated only with genetics, gender or the structure of muscles and bones.

It is the head of the Brabant that distinguishes them from other brethren. It is expressive, large and has a round shape of the skull. The skull is wide, the forehead is large and convex, the foot is pronounced. Against the background of the head, the muzzle seems rather short, its length is quite small, although visually it seems longer. This is explained by the absence of the so-called beard (long coat in the jaws and chin).

The type of muzzle is upturned, if in dogs the upper edge of the nose is located under the line of the eyes, such an animal must be disqualified. Prerequisite exterior is the dark color of the lips, as well as a tightly closed mouth. The human expression of the muzzle is due to the flatness of the muzzle, the nose of the animal is black, the nostrils are wide and open, the tip is somewhat flattened. When looking at a dog in profile, it can be seen that his forehead and nose are in a single plane.

The eyes of a small pti-brabansona reinforce the effect of humanity of a dog's gaze. They are bolshevatnye, different wide setting, painted in dark brown. At the same time, they do not have a bulge, which gives other dogs a form of underdevelopment, which is characteristic of a similar body structure. Ideally, the edges of the eyes should be almost black, the protein should not be visible.

As for the skeleton, its shape tends to square, but this in no way affects the freedom of dog movements. Her gait is not devoid of elegance and naturalness.She is light and relaxed. The constitution of a thoroughbred representative of the breed is proportional, the ears are small, set high.

According to the regulations of the established standard, they can be stopped, standing pointed, and also hanging.

The tail of the animal must have a high supply, the standard allows it to stop at 1/3 of the length. A show animal not undergoing cupping should have a tail directed toward the back, but not twisted but lifted upwards. The dental formula of the animal must be complete, the lower jaw may have some curvature upwards. Usually, the incisors of both jaws in a purebred dog form straight lines, relative to each other, they are parallel.

However, the bite itself is not quite straight: the lower jaw is slightly pushed forward. The teeth themselves are even and parallel to each other, the mouth is completely closed by the lips, the tongue fits completely inside the mouth. The lips are fleshy, but may have a slight pigmentation. The corners of the mouth dropped down, which gives the expression of the muzzle sad look.

Brabant short-haired baby has a medium-sized neck proportional to the body. His limbs are set parallel to each other, their arrangement is wide. The backbone is strong, elbows are located close to the body. Small paws are slightly rounded, they are not turned like other dogs. The paw pads are thick and dark, the claws of these animals are completely black.

Hock joints have a normal position of paws. There should be no lucrative fingers on the hind legs. Brabancon's hair is short, its length does not exceed 2 cm. The color of the animal may be different: for example, black tan with reddish or red markings, deer or mixed. Regardless of the type of color, the mouth of a purebred dog must be black. A characteristic feature of color is the presence of a dark mask on the face.

The life of these pets on average is 12-13 years. However, a considerable part of the representatives of the breed live to 15 years, which is considered to be a very old age for these dogs. Life expectancy is influenced by various factors, including conditions of care and maintenance, as well as genetics and timeliness of preventive measures.

Much depends on the nutritious diet and providing the dog with walks and activities, without which it weakens.

Advantages and disadvantages

The nature of dogs has positive and negative sides. The advantages include various nuances, for example:

  • great affection for its owner;
  • good nature, which shows the animal in relation to the household;
  • understanding of the good attitude of people;
  • lack of rancor or resentment;
  • the ability to accompany the owner on the trip;
  • ability in training and education;
  • Excellent interaction of the animal with other animals living in the house.

    Among the negative points worth noting:

    • poor tolerance of separation from the owner;
    • refusal to eat when the animal is sad;
    • tendency to aggression in the absence of education;
    • predisposition to skin diseases of individual dogs (a representative of the breed is often allergic);
    • the complexity of childbirth (often they end with a cesarean section).

    In addition, these dogs are distinguished by a heightened interest in everything that lies on the ground, and therefore they pull home all kinds of garbage.

    Character traits

    In general, these dogs can be excellent companions for people of different age categories. They feel the mood of their owners and can become favorites in large families. They love to play and appreciate human attention, trying to respond to it with gratitude and good behavior. Despite the fact that they are not a timid one, these dogs are not at all evil and do not hide an offense if the owner behaves unfairly towards them.

    Pets are very intelligent, have a dignity and can show a lot of emotions, which is pleasant not only to their breeders, but also to others. Sometimes the dog seems thoughtful, sometimes sad, sometimes funny or completely radiant with happiness. They manifest the spectrum of emotions very actively, accompanying their thoughts with actions.

    Sometimes these cute dogs miss their masters so much that they are on a hunger strike.

    They do not cause much trouble on trips and travels, they are livable and adapt to any requirements of breeders. However, homes without owners are very sad. Do not save the situation and the fact that they leave with well-known people. These dogs show true loyalty and dedication to their owners. For animals to be part of the family is extremely important, but because no one and nothing can replace them with a family, without which they consider themselves abandoned and useless.

    When the owner is near, the dog is incredibly happy, he is obedient and enjoys every minute given to him by man. However, in the soul of a dog that loves to show tenderness towards the household, he considers himself independent, she has a proud character. Living with a person for a long time, she can not only learn how to adapt to his mood and emotional state. This little dog can adopt the mimicry of a beloved breeder, becoming a reflection of the owner.

    Despite the need for communication, Brabancon will not allow himself to be too obtrusive, he will not be confused by his hosts. While still a puppy, he will try to behave well, pleasing the man so that the owner will love him. At the same time, the dog does not lose its protective qualities; if necessary, it will show its fearlessness, regardless of its funny appearance. In relation to other pets, it will also not be intrusive, but if you wish, it will always support any game or venture.

    Unlike his other brethren, Brabancon understands master jokes and does not respond to them viciously. He does not lose his playfulness and positive attitude throughout his life, and he shows playfulness not only with adult household members, he also loves children. Even at the old age he will not deny himself the pleasure of playing with them, the tirelessness of the animal is loved by everyone, it is admirable.

    At the same time, during the game, the dog will delight children with a mass of manifested emotions, which rarely go unnoticed.

    If necessary, the animal can empathize with its owner. However, if an inexperienced owner believes that the baby is just as friendly to others, then this is not the case. The strangers for Brabancon are not as valuable as the members of the family in which he lives. It only seems to the owners that the dog is good-natured: practice proves that these dogs are often very wary of strangers.

    Others they do not like at all, that they express the corresponding emotions and behavior. It is easy to predict: just look at the expression of the muzzle. As for pets, the only species of those to whom pets show genuine hunting interest are small rodents. They do not touch cats, rabbits or birds, but they can be chased after rats and hamsters.

    Training

    Training and education of dogs is best to start from puppy age. In this case, the requirements of the owner must be different sequence and logic. The curiosity of dogs must be directed in the right direction, because an unoccupied animal becomes stupid and can throw out its energy with unwarranted aggression towards strangers and everything around it. In general, these pets quickly understand the essence of the teams and willingly carry them out.

    They love to draw a lot, and for this training is an excellent opportunity. The dog is happy to perform the teams given to the public in order to once again receive praise from its owner. The representatives of this breed have an excellent memory, and therefore, when they memorized a team, they, as a rule, remember all their lives.

    However, in order for a dog to grow intelligent and educated, it is necessary to train it without the slightest hint of rudeness and intolerance.

    When training is encouraged encouragement that spur the interest of the animal. The dog does not just need to praise for the executed command. Given that when she learns, she behaves like a malleable child, she must understand the consequences of her act. And so without some sweets and affectionate word that she is a good young man, not to do.

    Remarkable is the fact that these dogs do not demonstrate their authority to the owners and do not try to dominate all households. In their hearts, they already know that they are at the top of the hierarchy of their masters. However, if the animal for some reason allows itself even a small aggression towards the owner, this behavior must be stopped immediately, so that it does not give its shoots. Any allowance and weakness of the owner can lead to the fact that instead of an obedient dog an uncontrollable imp will grow in the house.

    Content policy

    Caring for a pet-brabanson will consist in unquestioning observance of the basic rules: hygiene, walking, professional examination and excessive love with attention and care. Given the length of wool, care for it does not amount to much trouble. Even during shedding, she will not be wallowing around the house too much, as is the case with long-haired canine fellows. These dogs do not need pooderhok and a large arsenal of various brushes for care. Brabancon fur coat does not need to be combed daily with special fanaticism.

    However, as a relaxing massage, you can purchase a special brush, which will contribute to quickly adapting the puppy to the procedure.

    The coat of this breed is not sheared for dogs, as there is no need for it. A comb will be enough to remove dead hair, dust and light dirt from the coat. Washing Brabancons is often not recommended. Usually they are bathed as they are polluted, using special zoo shampoos for dogs with a short and smooth coat structure.

    In the winter season, washing is undesirable at all, since the dog after it may catch a cold if the house is cool. In this case, experts recommend drying her hair with a hair dryer, choosing the optimal mode of drying, which will not heat the pet's skin too much. As for summer, it is at this time of year that the dog is washed more often. And it's not even the fact that the owner wants the animal to be perfectly clean.

    The reason lies in the dirt that the pet carries from the street after each walk. Here it is important to understand that they wash the dog completely only if it is too dirty. After walking, it is enough to wash or rub her only paws. Its wool is not long, and therefore the dirt from the ground does not cling to it. However, in bad weather or after rain bathing becomes mandatory.

    Hygiene

    To teach the dog to hygiene as early as possible, along with other rules that it must obey in the house. In this case, visual inspection is not enough: the owner must monitor the condition of the teeth, ears, eyes and claws of the pet.

    The most important indicator of a dog’s health is its mood. If it has ceased to be positive, it is necessary to show the pet to a specialist to identify the cause of canine discomfort.

    Both the puppy and the adult dog need to clean the ears, in which the earwax is constantly accumulating. It should be removed with a cotton swab dipped in 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. If there are signs of inflammation or redness of the ears, the dog is urgently taken to a veterinarian for an appointment. Under no circumstances can you self-medicate, because only the doctor makes the animal the correct diagnosis and prescribes the correct treatment. When processing the ears, do not swab too deeply into the auricles.

    Eyes cleaned regularly, wiping them with a cotton swab dipped in warm boiled water. When detecting the eyes or reddening of the pet, they are taken to the doctor.The teeth are cleaned in order to prevent the premature appearance of yellowish plaque and tartar. In addition, the care of the cavity of the dog's mouth will allow you to save your teeth from early abrasion and pain.

    For their hygiene, you can use a special brush and zoo, it is suitable for dogs. Those hygiene products used by humans are not suitable for animals. Besides the fact that they do not like dogs because of menthol, these pastes can be dangerous to the health of pets, if they fall inside and are swallowed. Also, in order to hygiene of the oral cavity, dogs can buy special cleaning sticks in specialized stores.

    From time to time, dogs will have to shorten their claws, as they prevent them from walking and moving. Special kogterez allows to reduce the duration of the unpleasant procedure, reducing the level of discomfort of pets to a minimum. At the same time, the length is shortened quickly and painlessly.

    The owner only needs to make sure that the cut is not too large.

    Walking

    It is considered to be that pti-brabansons differ not only in endurance, but also are able to tolerate different temperature ranges well. They do not overheat in the sun and do not overcool in cool weather. However, this does not apply to regions of the country with a harsh climate background. Still, healthier dogs grow where they have greater access to fresh air. Caring owners get for their pets colorful warm clothes and socks that protect the paws from dirt and cold.

    Since childhood, these dogs love to walk outside, and once a day it is not enough for them to splash out energy. In the summer, they are happy to swim in shallow waters, frolic in the grass and love to explore the area. At the same time, they cannot be called hyperactive: their interest in everything has its own point of view.

    These dogs are not in vain interested in everyone around them, but should have an idea of how dangerous their environment can be to their favorite owners.

    Brabancons need to walk twice a day. At first, the puppy can be accustomed to the tray with a pallet. However, the dog should not abuse the need to take care of the house for a long time, otherwise with age it will try to “carry all its own” home. And it will add problems on cleaning and removal of an unpleasant smell.

    Walking the dogs of this breed is essential, and not only to maintain good physical condition. They are important as an element of socialization, because these pets have little communication with their owners. They need to spend some time among their fellows.

    Nutrition

    For all its virtues, decorative Brabancons are considered to be picky in their food and often prefer to eat only what they like. Some of them are quite jealous of their own dishes. Therefore, it is imperative that they have a personal one. Despite the fact that a separate category of breeders does not see anything terrible in feeding the dogs from their plates, this cannot be done.

    It is necessary to feed the animal correctly, choosing a nutritious diet so that it is saturated with vitamins, proteins and useful substances. Thanks to them, the pet will grow active and cheerful. It should be noted that puppies should be fed more often than adult dogs. On average, babies are fed about 4-5 times a day for up to six months.

    Their portions differ from the volume of adult animals, they are significantly smaller and are designed so that the puppies eat them completely. Half-year-old pet begin to feed less often, but at the same time increasing its portions. By the year the animal should eat no more than 2-3 times a day. With regard to the choice of food for pty-brabansonov, it can be both industrial feed and natural food.

    If a ready-made granulated feed is chosen as the basis for the nutritional ration, it is necessary to select it according to the age and degree of activity. It is also necessary to buy food with a high content of meat, which is typical for premium products. There is nothing useful in cheap feed.

    Moreover, with constant use, they are harmful to the digestive system of any animal.

    The size of the granules should correspond to the possibilities of crushing dog teeth. Puppies, as a rule, take products with smaller granules. Food should be balanced, consisting specifically of meat, and not of meat meal. The percentage of meat in the composition should be large, otherwise the animal will not be saturated with this feed.

    If you decide to feed your pet with natural food, you should especially carefully consider the choice of each element of the nutritional ration. For example, meat for the dog is extremely important and should form the basis of everyday food. However, it should not be fatty, beef, chicken, turkey, rabbit meat will be suitable for feeding. You can give it to an animal raw or boiled.

    If you decide not to boil the product, it is important to reduce the intervals of antiparasitic treatment of the pet. In addition to meat, the dog should eat chicken or quail eggs, fish fillets (from river or sea fish) and dairy products (for example, kefir and cottage cheese). Vegetables she can be given raw and boiled. In addition, it is necessary from time to time to treat your pet and fruit.

    We must not forget about cereals and vitamin complexes for dogs. Along with the observance of a balanced diet, it is important to regularly monitor the weight of Brabancon. Do not allow an excess of it, because it adversely affects health. No matter how much the owner wants the dog to be plump, it is impossible to allow fullness.

    If the breeder feeds the dog with pelleted feed, its quantity per serving should be less than the same weight of natural food. Industrial feeds are usually concentrated, and therefore less is needed to saturate them. Petite Brabancons need pellets in packages designed for small dogs with a high degree of activity.

    Regardless of the cost of buying in order to save weighted product is not desirable

    Few breeders think about the fact that after opening such a product begins to oxidize, which affects not only the taste, but also the degree of fitness. The longer such food will lie on the store counter, the worse it will be. The dog is small, and therefore it is better to buy small packages of feed for it.

    However, with regard to water, then, on the contrary, with such feeding you need more. And a bowl of fresh water should always stand near the feeding placeso that the dog is not forced to look for it in other places. Water needs to be changed every day, or even twice a day. For drinking water can be boiled and cooled. It is undesirable to take the flow-through from the crane, since heavy metal salts are often present in its composition.

    How to choose?

    You need to choose a dog while it is still small, turning to a proven breeder in a professional nursery. The weight of the puppy and its size should correspond to its age and sex. It is not necessary to take dwarf individuals that are not included in the standard and may further be disqualified. As a rule, mini-versions of Brabancons may not reach more than 2-3 kg in weight.

    In order not to be mistaken with the choice of the nursery, you can pre-scroll through the information on the World Wide Web about it, as well as ask at exhibitions about the honest name of a particular breeder. Visiting the exhibition will allow you to become better acquainted with the exterior of the animal and understand how it should look ideally. At the time of purchase, the puppy, as a rule, has the first beginnings of socialization, he learns to communicate with his brothers and sisters. At this time, he is already vaccinated and has the relevant documents (veterinary passport and pedigree).

    The sizes of puppies depend on their age. For example, at 3 months it can weigh 2.7 kg, at 4 months - about 3 kg. Others in 5 months weigh 3.9 kg, others slightly less - 3.5 kg. The average weight of a seven-month puppy is 4.5 kg.Crumbs weigh about 1.7 kg in 3 months.

    An experienced buyer knows that the more ancestors a kid has, the better. In order not to be deceived, you can invite a specialist to the purchase procedure, who only needs one glance to understand the conditions in which the puppy was kept, how developed it is, how sick it is, what its exterior is.

    In addition, a specialist can visually determine the exact age of a puppy, assess the condition of its teeth, the level of activity and the makings of a character.

    You cannot buy a puppy from the hands, like a baby without vaccines, because it can be a carrier of various infections. When buying, you can rely on the external data of the baby, his confidence in communicating with his fellows, as well as the cost. On average, the price for a purebred puppy is 40 000-100 000 rubles. It is high because the breed is considered rare in our country. In this case, the higher cost of puppies, which are bought for further participation in exhibitions.

    Reviews

    Dogs Brabancon have a high level of empathy, as evidenced by reviews of their owners. If the owner is bad, the pet can adjust to his mood and be sad for the company. This is unusual, but very touching, which allows you to get close to your pet and understand that the world is not so bad.

    In addition, as the owners of the Brabant griffons claim, these animals are very charming and sociable, which captivates even those around them.

    Some breeders are confident that their wards are highly intelligent and learn the teams literally on the move. Others point out that dogs cannot live without universal attention and care, and therefore they get sick and sad when the owner is busy and cannot give them proper attention. Other dogs after training do not allow themselves to inadequate behavior and aggression towards strangers. Others are altogether so kind that they trust many strangers. Also, the owners in the comments indicate that their pets do not like souls in children and can play with them for hours.
