When buying bedding sets, any hostess wants to choose a quality product. Which fabric is better, poplin or satin? What is better and what is cheaper? Our material covers these and many other questions.

Poplin features

The very first poplin fabric was made from natural silk threads specifically for the Pope. So its name was formed, because in Italian the word “papal” will be papalino, which in Russian transcription sounds like “poplin”. All types of this fabric are made by one method of weaving - plain, when weft threads, which are twice as thick as the warp, cross the main thread through one. Due to this poplin has a small transverse scar. The density of the poplin fabric is 90–120 filaments per 1 cm2. The color of the front and back side is matte.

There are the following types of poplin.

  1. Silk - it is woven from silk and woolen threads.
  2. Cotton - this canvas learned to do much later. It is based on cotton threads of different thickness.
  3. Mixed look. Technical progress allowed to combine in the tissues of natural and artificial (synthetic) fabrics.

Poplin is released, painted in four different ways:

  1. bleached;
  2. multicolored;
  3. smooth colored;
  4. with a printed pattern.
  • Natural fabrics are whitened.. For example, cotton has a brown color, which is very difficult to apply dye. The last stage of bleaching is maceration of matter in alkali. This gives additional strength to the fabric and increases its hygroscopicity.
  • Multicolored way coloring is that the threads that already have color are intertwined. From them and the pattern is formed in the cell or strip.
  • Plain fabric differs from the above in that matter is painted in one color.
  • The printed picture is sometimes called printed. It turns out when drawing is applied on ready fabric by fabric printing machines.

Unique properties of poplin

Poplin - natural fabric, the properties of which are as follows.

  1. Hygroscopicity. The fabric absorbs moisture well, holding it.
  2. Good thermal conductivity. Sleeping on such bedding is warm in winter and cool in summer.
  3. High breathability. The material allows the skin to breathe.
  4. For the characteristics of bed linen an important factor is what are tactile sensations From him. Poplin provides a pleasant feeling.
  5. Strength. Poplin products are resistant to deformation.
  6. Durability. Even with prolonged use and a large number of washes such underwear does not lose its colors and structure.
  7. Hygiene. Poplin - a fabric that is easy to wash, it does not linger pollutants. Her naturalness also matters.
  8. Hypoallergenic. Due to the wide spread of allergies, this figure is important. Poplin products very rarely cause adverse reactions.

Care for linen poplin

Due to the high content of yarns per square centimeter, poplin is a wear-resistant material that can withstand 200-250 washes. It is recommended to wash the laundry before the first use at a water temperature of not more than 30 degrees. In the future, it is possible to wash in water up to 40 degrees. Turn the set when washing, it allows you to better clean the joints.

It is not necessary to iron the laundry, as it keeps its shape well and practically does not wrinkle.

Satin features

For the first time, satin was invented in China, back in the XII century. Originally it was made exclusively from silk threads. The ratio of the main thread to the weft is 4: 1 or 6: 1. This means that the main fabric covers 4 or 6 weft threads. Satin weave includes the following features:

  • in the production of sateen use twisted yarn;
  • the main thread is stronger and thicker than the weft;
  • weft threads predominate on the front side, on the wrong side - the main ones.

All this creates a unique matter - smooth and silky on the front side, matte - on the wrong side.

The secrets of satin fabrics in Europe were revealed only in the 17th century. Then it was possible to modernize the process of its manufacture; they began to produce sateen from cotton fiber. Depending on the type of yarn used in the manufacture of the fabric, there are:

  • satin made from organic cotton;
  • cotton fabric with the addition of polymer fibers;
  • satin double, which is woven from cotton and viscose;
  • satin-satin made from silk and cotton fibers;
  • crepe-satin, from the previous type of fabric, characterized in that it is used either natural or artificial silk.

According to the method of drawing a pattern, satin fabric has several types.

  • Simple satin, where the density of weaving is 90-130 threads per square centimeter. Paint it the way the pigment printing.
  • The rammer contains from 130 to 170 threads per 1 cm2, the color of the canvas is created by dyed weaving fibers.
  • Coupon satin, the density of which is about the same as that of the pad. Differences in fabrics creates a method of coloring. The coupon satin uses the hot printing method. This allows you to create a drawing individually for each product.
  • In satin-jacquard weave 1 square. cm reaches a value of up to 200 threads. Treats expensive and elite fabrics, the person and a wrong side of which are equally beautiful that is reached by use of the loom at production of this material.
  • Mako-sateen also belongs to the number of elite and expensive materials. Its density reaches 250 per square. cm. Composition - the finest fiber of Egyptian cotton. Due to this, the fabric is soft and light.

Sateen properties

  1. Hygroscopicity. Matter absorbs moisture and sweat.
  2. Low thermal conductivity. Constant temperature is preserved, which allows not to freeze in winter.
  3. Durability and durability. Bed linen made from satin fabrics is resistant to deformation and constant washings.
  4. It keeps its shape well and does not need ironing.This is especially pronounced in fabrics with the addition of artificial fibers.
  5. Hypoallergenic. This property has a matter of only natural materials. If artificially synthesized fibers were added to the web, this may cause undesirable reactions.

Caring for satin bedding.

Before first use, it is recommended to wash the product in lukewarm water. Then the temperature during washing can be increased to a temperature of 60 degrees. Best of all, if the laundry is pre-turned inside out. It is necessary to iron such linen at a temperature not exceeding 90 degrees.

Jacquard fabrics are more demanding in care. It is necessary to wash them in a delicate mode without pressing and in water not exceeding the temperature of the human body. Dry in fresh air, but without direct exposure to sunlight. Iron at a temperature of 60 degrees.

Polysatin - what kind of fabric?

The peculiarity of the fabric is that the weft thread prevails on the front side. This gives the material a special strength, as well as a silky surface. The name polysatin combines the concepts of polyester fibers and satin weave. There are industrial, consisting of 100% polyester, and household (cotton and synthetic fibers in different ratios).

The main properties of domestic polysatin:

  • high wear resistance;
  • durability;
  • resistance to deformation and shrinkage;
  • relatively low price;
  • in care is unpretentious;
  • a large number of colors;
  • does not pass moisture and air.

The main difference from satin fabrics is the lack of hygroscopicity and air permeability. This entails increased sweating. This fabric is not suitable for sewing clothes and can cause allergies.

With prolonged use of bed linen from this material can be formed pellets. The fabric can accumulate static electricity.

What common?

We found out the features of each fabric - and poplin, and satin. Consider now what is in common between them.

  1. The first thing that can be called is that both of these fabrics are natural fabrics using cotton, so they will keep heat well, absorb moisture, and let air through.
  2. Easy to care. Easy to wash and do not require ironing.
  3. Durability and wear resistance. Bed linen made of poplin withstands 200–240 washes, satin - up to 300, while preserving the shape and color of fabrics. What is most important - not formed pellets.
  4. A wide selection of colors. At the modern level of printing it is possible to dye the material in any shade and even make 3 D printing.
  5. Neither poplin nor satin accumulate static electricity.
  6. These fabrics are easy to cut and sew.

What is the difference?

Of course, we found quite a few similarities between satin and poplin, but there is a difference between them.

  1. Weaving yarn The peculiarities of the interlacing of the main threads and weft create characteristic features. Poplin is a lighter, matte fabric in a small scar. Satin, on the contrary, is smooth with a silky sheen.
  2. The density of materials. Satin canvas denser poplin. The number of threads per square centimeter for poplin is 90–120, which is much less than satin - from 130 for a simple one and up to 250 for a jacquard.
  3. Due to the high density of weaving, satin fabric is considered stronger and more durable than poplin.
  4. The issue price remains an important one. Satin, as a representative of satin (silk) weaving, of course, is much more expensive than the highest quality linen poplin.

What is better to choose?

The choice of bed linen is very important in the life of every person, because we know that we spend a third of our lives in a dream. The quality of linen will determine how our sleep and health will be. Due to the advanced weaving industry, the number of bedding offers is simply enormous. Do not rush to make purchases, carefully review the available offers.

If you want to have soft, silky, durable and expensive looking bedding, then the choice is obvious - satin.

If you, on the contrary, prefer opaque, gentle, in an average price category, then the choice, undoubtedly, should fall on poplin.

Customer Reviews
