Green large parrots are very beautiful, they are even called noble, as these birds know how to behave with dignity and practically do not cause inconvenience in their behavior, they perfectly live with people.

The Latin name is Eclectus roratus, they come from Australia.

Description

Green parrots, or eclectus, are quite large in size - they can grow to almost 40 cm and weigh over 0.5 kg. Their color is also quite original:

  • the color of the males is green, the wings are bluish in color, the tail is yellowed;

  • Most of the feathers of the female are red-cherry, with a blue edging along the edge of the wings and the abdomen.

They look so different that for years the specialists considered the female and the male eclectus different birds. The differences relate to the beak, black in females and light uneven in males. Parrots of this species live up to 50 years.

Content policy

Since these birds are polygamous in nature, even if you buy a pair of parrots, they may not have a connection, and the relations of individuals will remain at the level of quite friendly and neighbor ones.

The parrots of this breed are very intelligent, they are well thought out and appreciate the benevolent attitude.

Owners need to learn about the characteristics of the food and the maintenance of large green parrots, before taking into the house of the pet.

They eat often, mostly food should consist of vegetables, fruits, berries, excluding avocado - this fruit can even cause death. Experts recommend very rarely feeding eclectuses with lean meat - in small quantities, since in nature birds eat a large number of insects, this can serve as a certain kind of compensation. Little parrots are fed with a spoon or syringe.

The diet of birds should consist of the following components:

  • germinated grain;

  • porridge (you can use children);

  • fruit and vegetable salads;

  • nuts:

  • low-fat cottage cheese;

  • sugar free cereal;

  • rye flakes.

Since eclectus food requires cooking, it is often made for future use and frozen. As for grain mixes, there are 3 types, and all of them must be present in the diet:

  • germinated;

  • soaked;

  • dry.

It is strictly impossible to feed the parrot only solid food and dry mix.

About once every 7 days you need to give a couple of grams of activated carbon to prevent various kinds of disorders.

As for the conditions of detention, you should definitely pay attention to the following points:

  • the most suitable temperature fluctuates around the mark of +20 C;

  • cage or aviary should be spacious;

  • periodically rearrange everything in the bird's dwelling, change toys, this must be done at least once a week, otherwise the eclectus will start to get bored;

  • Parrots are very fond of swimming, so arrange him a shower of rather warm, almost hot water with the addition of brewed chamomile, so the feathers will be healthier and sparkle;

  • let your pet wander around the room more often, since they like to fly very much, it is useful for them to move.

Eclectus education is a rather interesting activity. It is easier and faster to build a relationship with a male and tame him, while females are too suspicious and cautious for a long time. After the bird starts to trust you, the relationship will be very touching, regardless of gender.

These birds are extremely clever and intelligent, memorize phrases entirely, they are able to use them completely to the point, they sing songs. Often there are birds-neat, they put food in bowls, after playing, return the toys to their place.They perfectly master rituals and follow them, they are easily trained in tricks. They get along peacefully with pets, but they can bite them if they want to drive them away.

Feedback from owners of parrots of this breed is mostly positive.. Most often it is noted that birds differ in their peaceful disposition, curiosity, get along well with people and become faithful companions in life for their owners.

Breeding features

Parrot marriage games begin with a search for partners. They choose, as a rule, those hollows that are high, and therefore safe. For nearly a month, the female will prepare the nest for the future baby, and all this time she will not leave the nest for a long time. When the time of laying eggs comes, she will hide in the hollow and stay there, the male will feed her all this time. After the chicks hatched, he feeds them too. The female incubates most often 1-2 eggs for about a month, after which the birds hatch, completely unable to exist on their own. The female continues to take care of the babies until they can take care of themselves, the male carries the food for them all this period. Most often, it lasts about 3 months, and the male can simultaneously help other females and young birds, strangers who have nothing to do with it.

Diseases and their prevention

In order for a parrot to develop well, be healthy and cheerful, it is necessary to monitor its appearance and behavior. Proper nutrition, good care and the ability to move allow the bird to feel great.

If the bird is healthy, it is difficult not to notice, it:

  • rejoices you, actively behaves;

  • chirps a lot, talks, sings;

  • plumage glistens, lies smoothly;

  • no refusal of food;

  • no sleepiness;

  • in a dream rests on one paw.

What symptoms should alert you immediately:

  • refusal to eat or poor appetite;

  • eyes dimmed;

  • the bird moves a little, not in the mood;

  • breathes often and intermittently;

  • sleep is too long;

  • relies on two legs during sleep.

If you do not have experience in growing birds or you have noticed negative changes in the behavior and appearance of your feathered friend, it is better to immediately contact a veterinarian. Going to a doctor, take a litter for analysis.

Diseases are divided into 3 main groups.

  • Non-infectious. For example, vitamin deficiency. The most common cause of such diseases is malnutrition, monotonous food. In addition, there may be injuries, especially if you do not comply with safety regulations, letting the bird fly. Curtains and mirrors must be closed. The treatment is quite complicated, as the parrots pluck out their feathers after processing and applying ointments, tearing the bandages.

  • Infectious. Here the reason is viruses and bacteria, which can be in food, eaten litter. It is important to clean the cages in time and not to feed the bird with poor-quality, moldy food.

  • Invasive. They are caused by parasites, for example, salmonella, which can harm the owner of the bird. It is very important timely treatment to a specialist for treatment.

We suggest that you familiarize yourself with the symptoms of the most common and dangerous diseases in parrots, noticing which, you should immediately contact the veterinarian:

  • psittacosis: Eyes swell, runny nose and discharge from the anus, no appetite, apathy - can be treated with antibiotics;

  • salmonellosis: the first sign is diarrhea, after which it is necessary to immediately consult a specialist, since it is dangerous not only for the pet, but also for the owner;

  • roundworm: parasites affecting the intestines, causing impaired stool, refusal to eat, weight loss, pain when touched - disinfection and treatment is required;

  • scabies: the area around the eyes and the beak is inflamed, cavities appear on the beak, breathing is difficult, the scales on the legs are growing rapidly - can be treated with aerosol preparations;

  • gout: white knots on the fingers, weakness and lethargy, then increasing, then decreasing appetite, diarrhea and thirst - if you do not take measures in time, the bird will die in a few days.

Special attention should be paid to such a symptom as diarrhea. It can destroy the parrot, as most often indicates a serious illness. If the parrot is quite vigorous and active at the same time, then you can make a conclusion about poor-quality food and try to self-cure the parrot. If diarrhea is combined with other symptoms - immediately contact your veterinarian. In the case of a banal eating disorder prescribe the following treatment:

  • activated charcoal, crushed;

  • small dosage of phthalazole;

  • fruit tree branches;

  • proper nutrition.

Exclude from the diet lettuce, plantain, cabbage, green food.
