The main advantage of a homemade wooden bread box is long-term storage of bread in it, which remains fresh and soft. But it is also an original decorative piece of furniture that can become an interior decoration. Such utensils, of course, can be purchased, but with a basic knowledge of joinery, you can create a truly unique thing.

Necessary preparations

Before you take up work, you should think about what shape and size the thing will be, what material it will be made of. Formerly, since families were large, craftsmen created large boxes for storing bread, but today smaller dimensions are required.

Accepted product forms:

  • rectangular, square container with doors;
  • the box which is closed by a cover;
  • open dish with a fully opening lid, though the base can be used as a chopping board.

The door does not have to be simple - it can be flexible and resemble blinds.

It is possible to decorate an object by applying a pattern with coloring compositions, decoupage technique, by burning and carving, after which the outer side of the product is covered with a protective layer of special food lacquer or stain.

As for materials, it can be wood, plywood, birch bark, bamboo. The craftsmen create their masterpieces even from cardboard, cotton fabric, clay, newspapers, from plastic bottles. Breadbaskets made of wood and birch bark were the most widespread, and small wicker boxes made of wicker are also popular.

    Having opted for one type of product, it is necessary to draw a diagram based on the size and preliminary drawing. In this case, it is necessary to make a start from the amount of bread and the size of loaves (loaves) that will be placed in the bread box. It is important that the contents fit inside freely. It is allowed to create drawings immediately on a tree or other material.

    Manufacture of wood materials

    The bread box at home is often made of plywood, bamboo, bark, and natural wood. This is due to their preferential characteristics, such as breathability and moisture regulation inside the structure.

    A wooden product should not be made from coniferous woods, characterized by a pronounced smell, interrupting the aroma of bread. The best varieties for creating breadbaskets are ash, birch or linden.

    Plywood product

    You will need a clamping joinery ruler, clamps, jigsaw, manual milling machine, emery.

    • At the first stage it is necessary to cut out all the details in accordance with the drawing, best of all, with a jigsaw. Available should be the following blanks - the bottom, two sides, top, rear wall, doors.
    • Next, you need to fasten all the elements with screws, screws, glue or by means of a groove-tongue connection, having previously formed notches and spikes on the parts of the plywood.
    • Joints for reliability are handled with wood glue.
    • If the curtain door is conceived, it is made of slats, at the end an additional groove is made inside the breadbasket to move it.
    • Door hinged mounted on the front side of the product.
    • After that, you need to carefully polish the object. The patterned appearance of the kitchen attribute can be decorated with lace carving or paint the image.

    In the side and rear walls of the product make small ventilation holes, allowing the bread to breathe.

    A bread box is made of wood in a similar way, only as a material, boards or parts of a wooden sheet are used, according to which, according to the sawing scheme, details are cut out. Such a design may differ hinged lid, the presence of an internal shelf or split into sections.

    Features of the bamboo bread box

    The original thing can be created from bamboo rugs, and if small dimensions are necessary, from napkins, moreover, the work will take only a few hours.

    For manufacturing, you need to prepare cardboard, scissors, a self-adhesive tape, a piece of cloth, a pencil to create a sketch, you also need a beautiful souvenir handle for the door curtain. The size will depend on the parameters of the napkin.

    • First, the body is made from a thick sheet of cardboard.
    • To close the door tightly, the side walls are rounded on one side.
    • All elements are connected with glue.
    • Inside and outside the cardboard is glued with a self-adhesive film, giving it strength.

    The final stage consists in finishing with bamboo. If the napkin is large, it is enough for the bottom and the door.

    Birch bark box

    A product is created from the top layer of linden bark or birch, but it can also be crafted from ready-made material sold in stores for creativity.

    The order of work.

    • It will take 24 birch bark ribbons that are laid horizontally and vertically (12 pieces of 20 mm wide). Of them weave a rug, which will be a deep part of the box.
    • We need to weave the cover in such a way that its height is one and a half diagonals of hooks, which are 0.5 mm wider than those used for the base.
    • The edges of the product is fixed with stainless steel wire.

    The advantages of birch bark are soft bread, which is not exposed to mold and mildew, besides, the product does not crack over time.

    Breadbaskets from scrap materials

    An interesting option is to create a breadbasket from a plastic bottle and paper. A capacity of 5 liters is suitable as a base.

    Production steps:

    • the bottle is cut into two equal parts along the neck, and sidewalls are cut from the bottom;
    • take newspapers or waste paper, and tear into small pieces;
    • then you need to coat the plastic with petroleum jelly, and put the prepared paper pieces on top;
    • PVA glue is applied to the first newspaper layer, and paper is again applied to it, it is best to make 5-6 layers, after which the form is left for final drying, it usually takes several days;
    • as a result, hardened mold is removed from the plastic base;
    • To create a stand, you can use a deep saucer and do the same procedure with it as with parts of the bottle.

    All elements of the future breadbasket are fastened together with adhesive tape, and the stand is glued with hot melt adhesive. It remains to glue the design with ordinary napkins, and then paint it with acrylic paint. However, the decor can be chosen which one you like.

    You can also make an open breadbasket with your own hands from cotton and even ready-made knitted linen, which is soaked in starch water before being made. The main task is to create a dense inner base of cardboard, which will serve as a framework for soft material.

    • To do this, take a square sheet of cardboard with sides of 27 cm and a cotton fabric 1.5 cm larger. You will also need a ruler, a piece of chalk for marking, braid, pins, duct tape and iron.
    • Two pieces of fabric are sewn from three sides, then the resulting bag must be turned out with the front surface and cardboard inserted into it, then completely sewed.
    • Inside it, a square is drawn in chalk, stitched, and, connecting the corners with the help of pins, they get a semblance of a dish. Inside you can put a beautiful paper napkin, and decorate the sides with ribbons of ribbon.

    A nice bread tray, if desired, can be made rectangular and round, and you can use various types of material for this, including wool and linen blanks.

    Some craftsmen are able to create kitchen accessories even from plain paper, folding sheets into thick tubes, which are then joined by glue and intertwined. These blanks make fancy bread bins, which are covered on top, first with a primer mixture and then with paint. And they are no less valuable than crafts, completely hollowed out of a single piece of wood.

    The product created by his own hand, no matter what complexity it is, if done with a soul, will always delight with its original look and inspire the craftsman for further creativity.

    In this video you will learn how to make a bread box out of birch wood.
