Probably, each of us has a thing in the wardrobe that we cannot part with. Even if it has lost its original appearance, has become hopelessly small or large for you, it can occupy a place in the closet for years. Getting rid of this thing is usually hampered by pleasant memories, for example, how stunningly you looked in it.

Very often, such a fate awaits your favorite jeans. To find jeans that will be beneficial to emphasize the dignity of the figure, and to hide its flaws is a great success, which happens quite rarely.

If the jeans, which have recently been sitting flawlessly, suddenly stop fastening on you, you can try to increase them by a size or two using the methods tried by many generations of fashionistas. How to stretch jeans at home, read in our today's article.

In what places most often sit jeans?

Jeans can become small for two reasons:

  • The first reason is shrinkage after washing.
  • The second reason is more sad - a sharp weight gain. If the numbers on the scales remain the same, but your favorite pants are sitting very tight, most likely they sat down after you had washed them incorrectly.

Jeans sit in a variety of areas. Products from low-quality material, with a large percentage of the content of synthetic fibers can "cringe" not in some places, but completely, or in length or width. Better pants sit down only in sections. Most often - on the belt, which is why it is difficult for us to fasten jeans after washing.

Another possible problem area - the leg. Tight-fitting skinny jeans or slim fit jeans that include stretch are most affected. Therefore, buying tight trousers, be prepared for the fact that after washing they may become short for you.

Proven methods

There are several available ways to stretch jeans at home. We have compiled for you a selection of the most simple and effective methods.

Before using any of them, first experiment on an inconspicuous part of the fabric, since it is impossible to predict the response of the material to such measures.

Stretching while doing exercises

Denim is a cotton fabric that is not very elastic. However, to make jeans fit better, manufacturers have long learned to add various synthetic fibers to denim, which can stretch and taper under the influence of various factors.

The fact that jeans have decreased in size, it is usually these elastic supplements that are to blame.

You can stretch the fabric mechanically. It will be most effective to do it right on yourself. Therefore, we stretch our jeans and start charging.

We work with our feet: we squat, we swing, we sit on the splits, we make a bicycle in the air, in general, we remember all the exercises on the legs from school physical education lessons.

At first, the shrunken fabric will restrain movement, but soon you will feel freer. Continue until you feel that you are just as comfortable in jeans as before.

Take a bath with jeans

The fibers will stretch better and keep their shape longer if they are wetted beforehand.Soak jeans is also better for yourself.

For this procedure, you need to choose the day when it is warm in the apartment, and you are not bothered by a cold or other inflammatory diseases, otherwise the consequences of such an experiment will be dire.

  1. So, we collect a full bath of water (water temperature should be comfortable for the body, but not too warm).
  2. Then we stretch our jeans and dip into the bath. You need to sit there for 10-15 minutes so that denim is well soaked.
  3. Coming out of the bath, we begin to exercise - we do everything the same way as in the previous method.

Interestingly, the same method can not only increase the jeans in size, but also reduce them. We wrote more about this in an article about what to do if jeans are stretched.

Use the extender

In the dry cleaners, clothing repair workshops and sewing workshops for stretching the trousers in the belt area use a special device. In the original, it is called the waistband extender, but popularly his name is simply “extender”.

You can buy such a device in one of the firms that sells equipment for the above organizations.

It is very easy to use the trouser extender, you can easily master this device:

  1. First, the fabric on the jeans belt should be slightly moistened with a spray bottle.
  2. Then fasten the pants on all fasteners, take the extender and insert it inside the belt.
  3. Begin gradually stretching the device until the label stops at the desired value (starting the process, you need to take measurements off yourself to know how wide the jeans are to stretch).
  4. Now, without taking out the expander, leave the pants until the fabric is completely dry - it usually takes several hours.

Stroking and steaming

Another good way to stretch a denim fabric is exposure to it with hot, moist air. The source of such air can be an iron or steamer for clothes. This method is especially convenient if you need to stretch jeans in any one place, for example, on a belt or in the lower part of pants.

The settled section needs to be steamed for several minutes. Gradually, the fibers will begin to straighten, the former elasticity will return to them. While the pants are still saturated with warm steam, they need to be quickly put on - let them cool down already on you. Go around in jeans for an hour and a half so that the new uniform has time to lock in.

We use a sewing machine

If none of the above methods of stretching helped, then the situation is more serious. The elasticity of the material can no longer be restored, therefore, it is necessary to resort to drastic measures.

To do this, you will have to remember the skills of handling sewing accessories from needlework lessons. It is not necessary to be an experienced seamstress, but you need at least a little to be able to work on a sewing machine.

Reduce the seam allowances

This method will be effective only if the jeans do not fit you just a little in size. As a result, you will get an extra centimeter-and-a-half of width, but no more.

In addition to the sewing machine, you will need:

  • sewing device;
  • scissors;
  • small;
  • ruler;
  • needle with thread;
  • and a set of pins for grinding.

First, you need to turn the jeans inside out, then with the help of a spreader, gently dissolve the side seams in the places where the pants have become narrow for you. You may have to unzip the product over the entire length - do not worry, it just takes a little more time.

Now you need to plan the location of new seams, sweep, and then stitch on a sewing machine. Thus, it is possible to increase jeans by half the size.

Insert stripes - a slight increase in jeans by 2 sizes!

The most radical, but also the most effective way to increase jeans is to insert stripes in the side seams of the product.

At first glance it may seem that this way you can only spoil your pants, but if you do everything neatly and successfully pick up the material for the inserts, the result will be simply amazing.

The most important thing is to choose a suitable fabric for stripes. It should not only be well combined with jeans in color, but also have an appropriate density.

It will take a bit of material, a strip of fabric 50 cm wide is more than enough.

Next, you need to correctly calculate the width of the inserts. First, measure the waist and hips, and determine how many centimeters you need to add to the width of the jeans so that they sit as needed.

Then divide the resulting number by two and add 2 cm to the stock. Now you should cut two flat fabrics of the desired length and width and sew them into the previously sewn side seams of jeans.

Is it possible to stretch in length?

If, as a result of improper washing, jeans are reduced in length, not in width, you can return lost centimeters using methods already familiar to us.

Before you begin to stretch, it is recommended to wet your pants. In order to give the fabric a better manipulation, you can rinse jeans in warm water with an air conditioner - it will soften the material and make it more elastic. After that, the pants must be pressed, but not very much.

Stretch jeans can be different. For example, throw them through a horizontal bar, cling to them with your hands and hang as long as you can. Or stretch the pants on the floor, pin down their knees on the hips and with all the force to pull the pants up.

Tips

Choosing jeans, pay attention to the composition of the fabric from which they are sewn. The higher the cotton content, the lower the risk that after some time the pants will lose shape.

If the product contains more than 30% of elastane or other synthetic material, it is likely that after a couple of washings such pants will sit down or, on the contrary, stretch.

Any jeans can shrink: both purchased in a discount center, and purchased in an expensive boutique. Not only the quality of the material of the product, but also compliance with the rules of care plays a role here.

It is best to wash your jeans on your hands or in a washing machine on a delicate wash. Do not wash jeans in hot water and do not dry them in direct sunlight!
