Denim things are so firmly settled in our wardrobes that it is already difficult to imagine modern life without this comfortable casual wear. One of the main advantages of denim is that this material is very wearable. If you follow the simple rules of care, the denim for many years does not lose its original appearance.

That is why denim clothing is so often subject to alteration. After all, if the thing is not suitable for you in size or has had time to get bored, but at the same time is in excellent condition, the most correct decision would be to give her a new life, turning it into something else.

In today's article we will tell you about how to update old jeans, turning them into a cute, stylish sundress.

What is the best pattern to take?

The choice of patterns for sewing a sundress of old jeans will depend on who is intended for a new thing. If you are planning to sew a sundress for a child, then you can take one of the dresses from your little fashionista's wardrobe as a sample.

The main thing is to choose a thing in which the girl is comfortable, and which fits her size.

With an adult sundress, the situation is somewhat different. In this case, the pattern will have to do independently. Novice needlewomen better choose the easiest option, consisting of three or four parts, for example, a sundress like "apron".

A suitable pattern can be found in magazines and books on needlework or on specialized sites. Also circle the existing apron.

So, old jeans are ready for rework, the pattern is selected and made.

Now we need to prepare tools and materials that will be useful to us in our work:

  • bright fabric for decoration and decoration (you can use a simple chintz);
  • fasteners (buttons or buttons);
  • threads;
  • sewing device;
  • chalk, remnant or washable marker;
  • cutting scissors;
  • safety pins set;
  • sewing machine;
  • iron;
  • decorations (optional).
  • The first step is the cutting of jeans. First, cut off the upper part at about mid-thigh. Then cut each leg along the center (but only in front).
  • You should have two long canvases that need to be interconnected and stitched. This will be the middle of the front of the product. Allow seam allowances in one direction from the front. To better fix them, you can lay a line on a typewriter, using threads to match.
  • We proceed to the design of the bib. At the top of the canvases we draw sleeve armholes and cut off excess material by marking. Slices can be processed by piping, cut from a fabric contrasting in color. A frill at the hem and decorative elements will be made of the same fabric.
  • The bake can be bought ready, and you can cut it yourself from any material you like. In order to sew a tape on one cut, cut a strip of fabric of the appropriate length. The width of the striker should be twice that of the finished edging (do not forget to take into account the seam allowances).
  • Handle the edges of the cuts on the back of the product with a single facing. Take the tape and press the seam allowances, bend the edges of the strip towards the center. Fold the tape twice in width and iron well. Then spread out the bake and attach one side to the edge of the cut. Further detail should be stitched, leaving a couple of centimeters free to the fold line. Unscrew the strip on the front side, and secure with pins.On a typewriter pave a line on the edge. This obtachku can be done for all cuts, and at the bottom to put a frill of the same fabric.
  • At the final stage, the finished sundress should be decorated to your liking. For this you can use all the tools and materials available to you: embroidery, appliqué, painting on fabric, rhinestones, beads, etc.

Sundress for the girl

Tailoring a children's sundress requires less time and effort, so we advise inexperienced needlewomen to start with models for girls.

For a sample, take a dress that matches the silhouette, and transfer its contours to the fabric, taking into account the allowances for allowances. In addition, it is assumed that the denim sundress is worn with T-shirts and turtlenecks, so it should be somewhat looser than a regular dress.

When we transfer our “pattern” to the fabric, we should have two parts - the front and the back. This will be the body of the sundress, which must be supplemented with straps and patch pocket.

Straps we sew from two rectangular pieces of fabric: from the seamy side should be folded in half, then sew, twist and re-stitch. Pocket also cut out of the remaining material. Along the edges you can process it with a decorative line of bright threads and put the same line in the center of the straps.

We sew the straps, we supplement them with two rows of buttons, so that the sarafan can be adjusted in length. We decorate the dress in any way you like, for example, you can decorate it with a fabric appliqué with the image of your child’s favorite cartoon character.

Tips

  • If you are not satisfied with the original color of the material, you can change it at home. For example, the color of old worn jeans can be made more saturated with the help of special dyes for fabric. And if you want to sew a dress with a trendy scuff effect, treat the fabric with chlorine-based bleaching agent.
  • If you want to add a product with patch pockets, you do not need to cut them yourself. Just open the back pockets of jeans - decorated with a factory seam, they will look very stylish, even on a children's sundress.
