Every fashionista should have this stylish piece of clothing in her wardrobe. Want to learn how to sew a skirt with the sun with your own hands and what patterns to use? So this article is for you!

Consider the step by step process of creating a fashionable skirt, show all the options - from simple to complex - and tell you what to wear it with!

How much fabric will you need?

The first and most difficult in this case - the choice of fabric. Regardless of the season for which the skirt is sewn, it is desirable that she kept her uniform. Therefore, it is better to take a dense smooth material.

If, when choosing a fabric, to make a start from fashion trends, then you can stop at cotton, light viscose or linen - they are always relevant. Also fashionable fabrics are recently considered jeans, small velveteen, jacquard.

Such fabrics as organza, taffeta, satin, velor perfectly keep their shape. Depending on the style in which you see your future sun skirt, you can opt for one of these options.

When you decide on the material, calculate how much you need it.

Required calculations

To calculate the right amount of fabric, make the following measurements:

  1. Determine how long the skirt should turn out (it depends solely on your wishes and body type).
  2. Measure your waist circumference.

Now you can create a formula to calculate the desired amount of fabric: the length of the future skirt, multiplied by 2 + waist girth divided by 2 + 10 cm (calculated on the shrinkage of the fabric and the allowances).

That is, if you plan to get a skirt 50 cm long, and your waist girth is 60 cm, then you will need a length of fabric 140 cm [(50 x 2) + (60/2) + 10]. These calculations will be enough to buy the required amount of fabric.

You will also need adhesive tape for processing the belt. Its width is chosen so that it coincides with the width of the belt (and you define it individually, to your taste). When all necessary is acquired, you can begin the process of cutting.

How to cut a skirt?

Style sun is considered one of the most simple. Even a beginning seamstress can easily cut such a skirt.

For work you will need:

  • big table;
  • scissors;
  • pins;
  • crayon or remnant (sharply sharpened);
  • measuring tape;
  • a circle whose diameter exceeds the girth of your waist by 3 cm (allowances (1.5 and 1.5 cm) along the middle seam) - this may be a plate.

When the workplace is ready, proceed to preparing the fabric for cutting.

The first thing you need to check the fabric for the presence of marriage (if there is, you need to avoid this place when cutting). Next, determine which side is the front, and which is the wrong side.

Before proceeding directly to the cutting, the fabric must be ironed from the wrong side with the use of steam. Here not only an aesthetic, but also a practical goal is pursued - so the material will shrink.

Now you can cut! Instruction:

  • Fold the fabric in half face down, the edges should lie horizontally, closer to you. Attach the two halves of the fabric to each other with pins.
  • Along the fold line, set aside the length of the skirt + 2 cm (allowance for hemming of the bottom edge). Mark the reference point.
  • Take the circumference of the diameter specified above, attach it to the control point so that its middle passes through the fold line, and draw. This is your top skirt cut line.
  • From the received line set aside with the help of a measuring tape down (rays) several times (in all directions) the length of the skirt, adding 1.5-2 cm to it to the stock.Make control points, then connect them together. So you get the bottom line cut skirt.
  • On the upper cut line of the skirt, mark up the seam allowance — 1 cm.
  • Start cutting from the bottom of the skirt. Cut off excess fabric along the intended line.
  • Next, cut off the excess fabric along the top line.
  • On one side of the fold make a cut (from edge to edge). There will be a seam at the back of the skirt (in the middle).

Open the belt

To do this, you will need scraps of fabric that remained from the cutting of the skirt, and adhesive tape.

The skirt belt is a regular rectangle. Its length is equal to the waist girth, to which 3 cm is added (1.5 cm for seams allowances). The width of the belt is determined by you to your taste, but multiply the desired width of the finished belt by two and be sure to add another 2 cm (for the allowance).

Measure out the necessary values on the fabric, mark, cut.

Patterns

The cutting process described above is elementary and does not require the prior construction of the pattern. But for greater peace of mind and confidence in the success of the enterprise, you can take ready-made templates that we offer you.

Among them - the pattern of an elegant model of a skirt-sun on a yoke. In her case, you can experiment with the length by choosing the ideal one (maxi, midi or mini).

You can also, using the simplest pattern of the skirt-sun skirt, play with layering, making the second or even the third layer on the same patterns. Then it is necessary to choose more airy fabrics for the lower layers.

You can make the whole skirt of translucent materials. There is open endless space for your fantasy!

Sewing process

To complete the creation of your ideal skirt-sun, you need to install on the desktop a sewing machine and all the necessary accessories (threads, scissors, needles, etc.).

You may also need iron and pins, they also should not be far away to clean. Each seam will need to first be hand-painted (with a thread and a needle), then try on a skirt, and only then, if everything lays down and sits on you well, do the final seams on a typewriter.

We will consider two variants of tailoring: the simplest type of skirt is the sun skirt and the model is a bit more complicated, but also more universal.

How to sew a simple model with an elastic band?

You can try to start to create the most elementary variation of the skirt-sun. To do this, you need to cut out the model proposed above, but without a belt. The allowance on the top line of the cut in this case will need 4 cm more - the elastic will be sewn here.

A cut for the seam at the back of the skirt should also not be done. That is, to get the most simple skirt, you need to complete the first 7 steps given in the instructions above.

Then do the following:

  • Measure out the gum waist circumference. When fitting, take the elastic slightly to stretch, so that it keeps the skirt firmly in place (if you take exactly the girth, the skirt may subside).
  • Wrap the elastic in the top edge of the skirt, while slightly scraping the fabric. Brush manually, try on. If the skirt fits perfectly, stick the gum on the typewriter.
  • The final action is the treatment of the bottom edge of the skirt. Turn the edge twice (the first time at 0.5 cm, the second - at 1 cm). Every bend carefully ironed. To outline, try on. If the length suits you - you can stitch on the typewriter. If the fabric is too thin, you can treat the edges on the overlock with a small zigzag stitching.

4. That's all! The easiest skirt ready!

Sewing skirts with a zipper

The model, by the example of which we taught you to cut the sun skirt a little higher, is sewn just with a zipper. Therefore, we will move from a master class in cutting to a step-by-step guide to sewing. If you cut out the belt last, then start the product assembly process with it.

The mechanism of action is as follows:

  1. Use adhesive tape to process the belt pattern along the entire length and half the width. To do this, place on the seamy side of the future belt glue tape.Arrange it so that it stretches along the entire length and occupies half the width of the workpiece for the belt (the upper edge of the tape must coincide with the upper edge of the fabric).
  2. Attach the tape to the fabric must be with iron. It should be ironed through a piece of unwanted cotton cloth, otherwise you will ruin the sole of the iron. Before sticking the tape it is better to moisten a little. Fold the belt in half (lengthwise) so that the sides are inside and the sections are aligned. And in this position, iron again. The final touch is the final shape of the belt. To do this, iron it again, strongly delaying the cut and ironing the fold. So the belt will fit snugly around the waist. Be sure to sweep the belt after this cut.
  3. Now sweep the middle seam in the back of the skirt, leaving a place for the zipper on top (taking into account the width of the belt, because it starts on it).
  4. Next step sweep the belt (with the part on which the cuts are connected) to the top of the skirt. At the same time fasten the belt so that it stretches from one edge behind the skirt to the other (here it will be connected to the zipper skirt). Now you can try on a skirt.
  5. Once the fitting has shown perfect results, you can stitch the middle seam at the back of the skirt.
  6. Now sew a zipper fastener.
  7. Stitch the bottom of the skirt, tucking the edges as described above (see How to sew a simple model with an elastic band?)
  8. Process slices on overlock.
  9. Allowances to iron and fasten.
  10. Unscrew the finished skirt on the front side and iron the fastener and all the seams again.

Skirt is ready!

A simpler option is here.

What to wear?

In conclusion, I would like to give some fashionable tips on combining a skirt with other wardrobe items:

  • Since the sun skirt is a very bright thing, the top to it should be chosen more restrained, simple cut. For example, a lace-up blouse or a satin, a cardigan, a jacket or even a top would ideally be combined with it.
  • With a short skirt-sun looks great cropped jumper free cut and a moderate amount of jewelry that is suitable in style to this ensemble. This may be something in the style of boho.
  • Lush summer skirts from airy fabrics are in perfect harmony with skintight tops and pumps.
